I was just wondering if there was anyone out there that could provide me with some advice I am completely new to the model boating scene and am looking forward to my first purchase i am looking at spending around £200-300 squids and am looking for something challenging but not overly so as i love a fiddly challenge for the reward of seeing your creation afterwards. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as looking around i have been overwelmed and decided a dedicated forum would be the best place to come to speak to people who have been there and got the t-shirt so to speak.

 Many thanks

Hi and welcome.

Well, thats a pretty broad request, can you narrow down a little to any particular type of boat/ship? i.e. warship. sub, tug, fishing boat, passenger ship, etc etc

Apologiese just really excited about the idea. Initally i was looking at warships but believe my budget to be too small, so after a bit of reseach I was looking at the Caldercraft SS Talacre -Single hatch coaster??????

When you say your budget is not big enough for a warship
Have you considered model slipways Kawkab Class patrol boat?

It is aimed a people with little modeling experience and
the company owners are very helpful and post on here

Hi there James
Have you thought about the Robbe Scheutze fast minesweeper.
I did this and found it most enjoyable with reasonable instructions and drawings. It also sails well.
My build is on the forum if you are interested.

James.
Caldercrafts talacre would be a superb chioce. it was my first radio controlled model and really allows you to use your own imagination to create what can be a lovely model and yet at the same time doesn't have to be too taxing. Mine won a couple of exhibitions in the 1990's. I do have a series of photos of it if you would like them. send me an email and I will forward them to yo.

regards,

Barry

The Talacre was my introduction to RC boats as well, except in my case I was given a complete working one!  O0

I caught the bug then!  ;D

James,
Which ever model you choose, always plan ahead. if you can be aware of things needed to be done later, you are less likely to make a mistake today. Talacre will run well on a simple 2 channel radio. Dont forget to put working lights in. Some can be disguised in the rigging and all can be operated off a switch and batteries. Consider a smoking stack as well. These can be very effective.
Most imporatant of all though.....Enjoy it...

Yes she does look a beauty. Have a look at this site...http://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/index.html
I have just ordered the hull and plans for their Lady T, which also looks great. I like the system as you only pay for what you need. May be worth considering and Bryan at Mobile Marine is a very helpful chap. You can either ring him or email him anytime and about any thing. Let me know what you finally decode,

barry mate just been looking at the lady t now thats going to be one stunning tug when you get that put together and your right this budget buy system sounds great as im a student so paying in instalment can only be a good thing. He he he how many man hours do you anticipate what you have ordered so far will take you?

James.

The budget buy could be perfect for you. If you drop an email to Bryan and ask him what he recommends given your limited budget and experiance, he will happily help you out, plus he will always be ther to advise, having said that so are we here on the FORUM.

I am going to try and make the Lady T look like a good old working vessel and will include Smoke generator, steam engine sound, whistle sound and working lights. No idea how long. Several hundred hours I expect. Still it will keep me out of trouble durin the winter.

Hi James

contact the vendor for advice first.

some of these models with a lot of detail are recommended for experts, and others are not.
They will be able to give an idea of the skill levels involved.

I say this coz I know that some models only have the bare minimum of instructions and require some more advanced construction techniques.

Were as other highly detailsed models do not. It is the same with plans.

Learned a lot on my first kit build and I gained a lot of confdence, but I will admit at times I was totally out of my depth. And this kit was not for experts.

Some require a lot of cutting and some fancy tools.

Remember to budget for all the electric bits, you need transmitter/reciever, servos (most TxRx sets come with a couple), motors, prop, propshaft, kort nozzles or schottle drive (if a tug), BEC (perhaps), ESC, battery and charger (if using nicads then cheap, if using lipo then can get expensive), fibreglass and resin (if wood hull from planks), paint, adhesives, some basic tools, masking tape, paint brushes etc.

I am not saying this to be pessimistic, but you might want to budget for things you can readily lay your hands on.

So again, contact the vendor/manufacturer, they should be able to recomend the drive system and give quotes.
If you speak to bigger outfits and tell them your target budget all in, they should be able to help you stay near your budget.

My wife thinks my first kit costs 300 dollars plus postage. If only she knew what the finished boat cost by the time I threw a few tools in as well.

On the other hand, a converted Revell Corvette can be got onto the water for about £150, all in, including some tools.  That gets you on the water with a warship and £150 to put towards the next one.

good news,
due to the budget buy system i have been able to cheekily allocate sections of the model (rosegarth) to my family members as they were desperate to know what to get me for Christmas?  O0 result  O0. I also have found my old remote controlled car which i built from a kit and was wondering wether i could cannibalize any of the parts? just a thought. as i am no longer breaking into that much of my budget i have a bigger chunk for tools extra materials literature etc...

how very exciting.  :D
