Title: Suppliers needed for "A" Class fittings
Post by: Tom Eccles on January 12, 2008, 08:47:03 pm
Hi all,

You may have noted on the Yachts and Sail board that I have been asking for suppliers of sails/ fittings for an "A" Class to enable a number of our club members to sail these beautiful boats.

With the exception of Sailsect we have had NO respnses.

ARE THERE ANY SUPPLIERS OUT THERE WHO WISH TO DO BUSINESS WITH OUR CLUB??

We have initial orders from club members for 5 hulls, all of which will require all the equipment required to turn a hull into a sail boat.

If you know of any suppliers please P.M. myself or Firstmate

Frustrated

Clegg

Hi there Clegg. You could try contacting Poole Radio Yacht Club as they have a large A class yacht section. They might point you in the right direction.

Their web site is  http://www.pryc.co.uk/aclass.htm    O0

Also PJ Sails for sails and fittings.

I am sure it will be before you NEED the fittings !!!.
Talk to Martin face to face, sort out exactly what you need, worth waiting a while for !!.

Hi John,
I have just spoken to Andrea of Housemartin Sails. Most welcome conversation with a lady who is VERY knowledgeable.
I am sure this will be the way to go for the main rigs..... all we need now are some sail winches....

Cheers and many thanks to all respondents

Glad to see you are getting there slowly but surely, you are right about Andrea, I believe she has won quite a few races in the past. As far as winches go, unless you want ultra high speeds with corresponding prices you cannot go far wrong with the Hitec HS785HB. At around £21.00 each two shouldn't break the bank. I got mine from Howes, but I see they are presently out of stock.

Hi again Clegg, if you use the Hitec winches to save space put them nose to tail as per pic. Also it helps to get the sheeting running on the 'right'side of the drums (one of those simple things that makes my brain hurt !!) - The hole on the other side was where I got it all wrong the first time  {-)

Thanks for that Mike,

I am assuming you have both winches connected via a "y" lead, am I right?

You must be a mind reader, we have been discussing winches, some intend using a single large winch but I have been expounding the advantages (HA!! what do I know) of twin winches.

Thanks again Mike

There is a list on the MYA website of suppliers PJ Sails specialise alot in 'A' class.
What hulls are you building, I am thinking of an 'A'Class.

Hello Clegg,
On my website in the Photo Albums, Gosport World Championship, there are lots of photos of A Class boats.
Boats from all over the world were sailing and parked up on the grass - - - you would have loved it !!!.
Cheers, John.  :)

'Morning Clegg - yes the winches are on a 'Y' lead. Originally (to save pennies) I had a single old red type Whirlwind fitted which worked fine in light airs but I know would have given up the ghost eventually. At Gosport there is a mix of one or two winch boats,  leaning towards two at a guess but all are the expensive RMG winches or similarly expensive manufacturers. It would be nice if your clubs identical A boats used the same gear to make the skipper's skill the important thing. Unfortunately as has been found in other designs in the past, it is human nature to try and add bits within the rule confine, the Marbleheads being a good example.

Mike

PS I've just had a look myself and it seems to have got bigger !! For closer shots of individual yachts on the water look around number 90 (!) but they are all worth a look

WOW!!!

Great photographs. I cant wait to see "our" flotilla on the marine lake here at Southport. It confirms my wish to drag a few of the members up to Fleetwood on a sailing day to see how the big boys do things.

Mike, I agree with you on all in the class having similar fittings, That is why I am pleased that a couple of us will be visiting Housemartin Sails to sit at the knee of a master..... We wish to be able to have a rig set supplied that will have all of us on an even keel (excuse the pun).

Which ever way we go it is with thanks to you and Jaydee and all the guys who are giving us support.  If I am not careful I am going to have to take this sailing lark seriously.

BTW I still have not worked out how to get the hull past SWMBO I think she is getting suspicious.

Cheers and many thanks to all

Tom

Thanks Mike,

I should deflect your apology by telling you that Clegg is not my surname, its a sort of nom de modelle given to me by our very own FLJ.

It may also help if everyone is aware that in our club we can also boast a Foggy, a Compo and a Howard. (We really do have the "T" shirts) Maybe it becomes clear why we are often accused of not taking things too seriously.

Cheers

Tom,

Whats the problem getting the hull past SWMBO ! - Your a man - Lie ...

"Hi love, look what I've just bought for the house, a new window box.  You know love, now you mention it, and I look at it again, it does resemble a hull ! - I wonder if I could .... "

easy (practice holding the hull in front of a mirror !)

Good luck - Ken

The other members of our club triumvirate i.e. Foggy & Compo Have promised to tell SWMBO I won it in a club raffle.

Trouble is they said exactly the same thing when I acquired my Kyosho Seawind-then promptly admitted they were lying!

The pregnancy thing has certain attractions though........ :)

Careful Clegg - getting the good lady pregnant so she is too distracted to notice a bloody great big boat in the kitchen is taking things to the extreme, I would say !  {-) {-)

I have the feeling that getting my lady pregnant would start a whole new religion, or divorce proceedings when SWMBO finds out!..

I do take your point though.

Do you think I might be able to just turn up with the hull and then swear blind I told her about it over Christmas?

Ho Hum

Whoa down ! getting into deep and murky waters here !!
Maybe try the brazen approach eg "Look what I found in the skip dear" or "saw this in the charity shop and thought you might like it "  ::) ::)
