I keep getting the following error message when I try to send private messages.
mail(): Failed to connect to mailserver at "127.0.0.1" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()
Is it my configuration or a problem on the site.
Thanks

Am getting this one "mail(): Failed to connect to mailserver at "127.0.0.1" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() "
Any ideas

CWM I just sent you a private message and had the same response, it could be a left over of the crash, maybe Martin can have a look and sort it out..

The message is to do with the email function that's configurable by each member, and nothing to do with the posts themselves. Each member that has email notification configured for private messages, or email notification of particular posts will get the error. Those that don't, won't.
Either the admin email account details aren't correct in the admin configuration setting screen, or the SMTP settings aren't correct, or your hosts SMTP server also has a problem and isn't working properly.
The error message indicates an internal network IP address so another option is that your host haven't configured the connection from your (I presume) virtual hosting server to their SMTP mail server correctly.
I'd double-check the admin settings first and then try contacting the host to see if they can find a problem at their end :).
-
I've checked the settings and will post this message to see if it still brings up the error on my home machine.
-
Yep, still get the error.
This does happen on my laptop at work as well so any other ideas to try on the forum admin settings.
Richard
-
All email notifications turned off so will try again
Yep message still there.
Richard
PS didn't come up when I modified this post

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and is one of the more common means these days of sending/receiving mail messages.
127.0.0.1 is a unique and special internal network address that can only refer to the host machine.
I notice though that the error message goes on to specify a problem with php.ini and refers to port 25. These are normally specified by the installer of the php scripting interpreter on the machine hosting websites. I'd still say that this is a hosting company error and probably only they can fix it - especially as Martin said in one of his messages that the entire server had been hacked.
What's puzzling is that posting messages to a message forum has absolutely no interaction with sending mail messages, unless the poster has specific mail requests selected.
Obviously, from the comments above, that's not the case, so why is the action of posting a message trying to access the mail server?
I'm wondering if there's still a nasty piece of code running somewhere that's attempting to post user account details to some unknown address. Maybe it wan't a simple 'nasty message' hack, but one which also planted some code?
I'm guessing the webhost would have checked for this, but maybe not.

Wow Dave, I wish I could talk dirty like wot you do, the only bit of your last post that rang any bells with me was the 'Simple' bit. Definitely whatever you say I'm 100% behind you ;D ;D
Ain't computers great ??
With the likes of yourself and Martin I'm sure you will get it sorted.
Best regards
MikeK

I'm sure Martin has this well in hand Mike - I'm just throwing out ideas ;D

Hi Dave,
My mate Tim that set this all up for me also set up a backup forum and there are no error messages on there.
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/new
As you seem to know a bit about these things would you mind have a look at the settings if I set up a temporary Admin account for you?
Martin.

Martin,
I'm no expert, but have run SMF, PHPBB and VBulletin forums before (all gaming communities) on both shared and dedicated servers. I'd be happy to help in any way I can and have sent you a PM. I'm guessing PMs are still working, despite the SMTP error?
Dave

Hey Dave!
This is a steep learning curve for me as you can imagin!
I've changed your logon - you should now be able to see the Amin tag at the top.
Thanks,
Martin.

I get this error on random posts...
mail(): Failed to connect to mailserver at "127.0.0.1" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()
despite the error though the posts do actually work and appear after a refresh..
-
Hi Dannymax,
We are working on a fix but it quite elusive at the moment.
( Still a bit of fall-out from the hack)
Martin.

Martin
Sorry about the unwanted publicity - I did my best to protect your identity....
I was getting the error messages BEFORE the hack. Don't think the problem is hack related?

Hi Martin
Good to meet you too, but I suspect that we had met previously at Leamington Spa last November?? You took loads of pictures at that show as I remember?
Carol is going to sort a Forum logon out for herself this evening which should clock the membership up to around 580.
Carol is quite an expert on Flags, having looked after our BECC sales for a couple of years, and she deals with Chris & Colin on a daily basis.? Carol has the uncanny knack of remembering most if not all of our regular customers names!
