Welcome to the Mayhem Build Masterclasses!
In this section you will find a selection of build topics which the Moderating Team consider exemplify the spirit of excellence in boat modelling. Each one comprises both text and pictures presented in a way which is both instructional and informative and which we hope will be inspirational.
All types of boats may be featured and it is intended that the builds will cater to all levels of ability from the beginner to the experienced modeller alike.
Entries in this section will generally deal with complete build projects only. Topics covering specific techniques or subjects and specialist tutorials can be found under the appropriate heading in the Nautical College main section of the Forum.

I don't know if you accept nominations for the Master Builder Section, but if you do I'd like to nominate Gerry George and his TID tug build from scratch. His work definitely fits th master builder quality you're looking for.

Without doubt it certainly was a master class and deserving of such an award.
I would however also nominate Bluebird purely for the reason that his builds in that section start with a beginners and moves on. It really is step by step tuition all for free. For me - a beginner in scratchbuilding - I could follow his masterclass and achieve excellent results in particular with Cervia. On line tuition that is second to none.

Hi Martin,
May I suggest that your Moderating Team consider Bryan Young’s Northumbrian as an appropriate addition to the Mayhem Build Masterclass section?
I’m sure no-one could dispute that Bryan’s reports easily meet your first two criteria of being both instructional and informative, but, for me, his project of turning the “turtle” into a superb fully equipped operational Tyne Ferry is a outstanding inspiration for us all.
His pictures and text show that he is as skilled with the story as he is in the workshop; his craftsmanship seems exemplary and rarely matched by many of us with two good eyes; his creativity and innovation frequently had me wondering “why didn’t I think of that?”; but, especially, his gritty determination makes me ashamed to admit how often I have been discouraged by relatively trivial setbacks.
No, I’ve never met him, and I only know him through his particularly entertaining build reports here which I ‘couldn’t put down’ just a few days ago. And he’s definitely not my dad (as far as I know!), but if he’s looking for an orphan to adopt I’d happily volunteer!

Mods, Having seen theNorthumbrian in the flesh as it were I can tell you it is a work of great skill and worthy of a build masterclass insertion.
I have to add I do know Bryan and have seen the other boats in his fleet all of which testify to a standard of building far above the average.

Gents, and any ladies out there, just to help clarify things a bit. The models we decide to put into the Masterclass section are ones that we decide have met a number of criteria. Not only do we expect it to be a superb model that exemplifies the best modelling skills we can all aspire to but the build thread itself should be of an equal quality incorporating interesting descriptive text supported by equally good photography. We carefully study all potential inclusions in the Masterclass section to ensure that the highest possible standards in all directions are met as we want to maintain the level of excellence that the Masterclass section stands for as Jolly Roger so rightly points out.
We are obviously well aware of Bryans capabilities in all those directions and have many very popular threads on here to attest to that, which is why we are more than happy to consider this model. As it happens I also know Bryan and I've also seen his other models but unfortunately we probably won't take that into consideration!
Thanks for the nomination gents, as has been said, we are considering it, which usually also involves a discussion on who has enough time on thier hands to split the existing build thread into a stand alone Masterclass build and a Q&A thread!

Hullo Martin & Moderators....... :embarrassed: ...some time ago I remember reading a posting re a nomination to Master Class, however the reply noted that the vessel ...''needed to have completed her water trials" ...this may have been Georges TID tug.....
Is this the case?.....is there a criteria listing for this category that members can view & read?
The reason I ask this is ...we have previously read that Mick may have transportation or mobility problems getting his Wide-A-Wake build into the water <:( ........Derek

The "rule" is the vessel has to be completed, at least externally/visually, ballasting, sea trials, safety certificates and
Owners acceptance are not obligatory as would be the case for static or waterline models.
I guess the criteria is, only the best vessels will be considered (obviously) ACCOMPANIES by a full build blog on Mayhem . :-)
....by the way, not a masterclass but a fantastic read!
