Title: RNLB PHIL MEAD, ex Teesmouth RNLI station
Post by: gribeauval on May 07, 2008, 04:18:13 pm
Between building Mersey class lifeboats and refurbishing Trents amongst other projects, I also built a 1/12th scale model of the Tyne Class lifeboat RNLB PHIL MEAD. I decided to do this as I was upset when the RNLI closed the Teesmouth station. As a tribute to the crews there I built the boat AND the boathouse/slipway. This was so that I could launch the boat in the correct manner.

As the weather was fine and I needed to sort out my outside workshop I inflated and filled the test tank, dusted off and assembled the slipway/boathouse and gave the boat its first 'wet trial' down into the water.

I am pleased with the results and now need to do the same with open water to sail away on! 8)

Excellent looking model, with a novel launch method. I bet that will look good with the boat powering away after the launch, look forward to seeing the video of that.

Thanks Roger, I always like making my models do obscure or oddball things. This Tyne for instance raises its own mast, aerials and switches on the radar without the need to touch the boat.

Mike,

I liked the vid with the gear rising into place. I looked hard but could not see how you achieved that. Can you enlighten us, please?

It's all done by wires Roger !!  8)

Each part is connected by thin braided fishing line to a servo arm in the cabin, the aerials are guided into position by clear persrex plates ( at more than 3ft you can't see any of this!). This servo arm also turns on the radar and navigation lights when it contacts the microswitches at the end of its travel (picture 3).

Thanks, Mike.

I presumed that was the way you had arranged it, however - as you said - it was not at all evident in the vid.

Been down the slip on the real thing   O0 ...didn't even get wet standing on the deck - all the water gets thrown to the side by the shape of the bow.

Great job,
I just started researching the Tamar Class, and the new Tenby boat house, and
here you have the whole works operating already.

Excellent work.

Excellent work.

Thanks Umi, my boathouse doesn't have the tilting cradle used by the newer ones but that shouldn't cause any problems!  ;)
