Hi Folks,
Can any one out there enlighten me as to correct colour/position of mast lights carried on a 29m tug. Looking at photos reveals a Christmas tree.

Mast lights on English tugs if memory serves me correct,
Single masted tug
very top "all round" view = Anchor light = white
Top Mast "Fwd" view = Towing of lenght exceeding white
Center Mast "Fwd" view = steaming light / Towing white
Bottom Mast "Fwd" view = steaming light white
N U C (can have two sets or one set seen from all around) they are from top of mast down "red -- white -- red"
to the stern normally above the stern light (white) is an amber or orange towing light (these can only be seen from the rear of the tug)
I may have this next bit wrong (I am an engineer after all) the mast lights
the very bottom one comes on with the port and Starboard and white stern lights, then with a short tow the middle white would be on and then with a long tow the top white would be on as well this denotes the type of vessel and how long the tow line is being used.
N U C (not under command) are used to denote restricted maneuverability.
Also day shapes would be hoisted BALL -- DIAMOND -- BALL to show others in the area of the restricted maneuverability

Have the "Rules" changed that much!? I think you may have got a few things a bit adrift here. In fact there are so many anomalies that I would like a bit of time to sort them out. But we did discuss this earlier...didn't we? Cheers. BY.

The one that hit me first was the "red -white -red" thing. Thats a signal shown by such ships as cable-ships and not tugs. Follow the link given by Colin, it'll save me typing it all out again. Bryan.

what about a survey ship towing a sonar below the waves? would that be classed as the same as trawling?

So if I am right in reading this to show RED WHITE RED is wrong?
Tell my why when towing a vessel is restricted in its manouverability so therefore displays the 'N U C' lights, have done on all the tugs I have served on?

The examples on the other thread show NUC as being two all round reds only. Red, white, red is restricted in ability to manoeuvre.

I may have mad a mistake which is my terminology of lights red white red are on the N U C nav board so are referred to as N U C's sorry to all if my use of the term has caused any confusion

NUC is terminlogy for "Not Under Command". This doesn't mean that the Captain has done a runner, more that the ship has lost power and cannot obey the "rules", and is drifting at the mercy of the elements. In shallow water an anchor could be dropped....but without power how could it be picked up again.
