Title: Is the golden rivet true?
Post by: lifeboat paul on June 10, 2008, 04:50:51 pm
My wife's uncle served on the Duke of York during the war, he told me about the golden rivet ,apparently new shipmates were told that all ships had a golden rivet down in the bottom of the ship , whilst they were bending over - you can guess the rest - did this really used to happen or just a naval yarn, he recons it did ?

Paul.

Its still going about on ships but is just a sailors tale.

One actual question though:

Traditionally where is the last rivet on a riveted ship fitted?

I told this tale to my late wife way back in '62 just after leaving the MN. Wasn't quite sure so I took her into the elec cupboard to show her :D She got quite a surprise  {-) {-)
