Right. This is getting stupid now.
Over the past week I have managed to loose 6 pencils from my modelling room. I know for a fact that I haven't walked out of the room with them. I have also pulled the room apart looking for them.
But NO pencils.
No longer do I find this funny. Either:
A) Someone with a pencil fetish is breaking into my house each night and stealing them
or
B) A large bird of un-known species flies through the window when I'm not looking and carries my pencils off to make a very specific type of nest.
And what ever IS happening happens fast. I put a pencil down in front of me, glue up a piece of wood, go to get said pencil to make the next set of measurements and it's gone.
This should NOT be physically possible!!
I know that other people have similar problems - for example £20 notes regularly go missing from Mrs Steve's purse when she is in town, and magically transform into new pairs of shoes in the closet at some future point in time "wow... I simply CAN'T remember buying those...." is a regular refrain in my house..
But this is now beyond a joke.
From this point on I am going to fit radio collars to each of my pencils. And I shall track them down where ever they may be. Unless they are actually removed from this set of dimensions by the pencil fairy.

You need gps trackers on them!
I have just the same problem, I have a jar for pens & pencils to which I always return the pencil to after use. Next time, is there a pencil there? NO CHANCE!

Try gluing them down with just the point sticking over the edge of the bench that way they cannot run away and you can still use them by holding the thing to be marked against them.

I use a cheap plastic propelling pencil that I bought to take to technical college with me in 1975 and I have used it ever since. The texture has now been worn smooth with use but I still know where it is and I have never lost it.
Now there are people out there who critisise my nice clean, neat and tidy work area ::)
I rest my case m'lud.

i use the big oval contractor pencils so they cant roll away!! but they sure
look like the planks i'm useing {-) :D

The pencils are hiding in a dark corner with the 5 single socks, the 2 paper clips, 3 drinking straws and the plastic toy soldier.. ;)

I think missing pens and pencils transmogrify into Lego.
If I tidy the car - I find Lego blocks under the seats. If I move furniture - I find Lego. When I empty the washing machine - more Lego. :D

And I bet you've never actually owned any lego in your life?
I know that people are finding this funny, but it is a serious question. I have just emptied my entire model room bit by bit. And I found 1 pencil. So there are still 5 missing. Mrs Steve doesn't go in the room, and I have checked every pocket and item of clothing I was wearing as well.
All I can do now is either ring Ghost Busters or some speccy nerds from a physics department at the local Uni - there would seem that there is a good chance that something quantum is happening here.....

It could also be a manifestation of the transperambulation of pseudo-cosmic anti-matter, or a tradition, or something.

I haven't actually checked the goat shed. Shoukld probably go and do that.
Although I have to say that the goat seems to be calming down a bit with it's obsession of eating anything. Now the meadow is growing well if I put anything else in front of it to eat it just gives me a snotty look and occasionally aims a back hoof in my direction for being cheeky.
I think it takes after Mrs Steve....

Workshop Gremlins! The little sods move everything and there are many differnt Gremlins who specialise in the various items in your workshop. My Own workshop has a Gremlin infestation and it drives me crazy, sometimes they will nick something and dissapear it forever, othertimes they just take it away for a while, make me turn the place over looking for it and then put it back exactly where I left it.
I am getting wise to their little tricks now, I pretend to go mad when something vanishes...just so they think they're getting to me.. I look in the same place for the item a couple of times and swear a lot then craftily walk away muttering...this makes them think they've one, then suddenly I reappear out of the blue and surprise them by finding the item back where itoriginally was ..har har!!
They won't drive ME mad you know, not now I know what they're little game is. :D :P

What's a washing machine???? I have a wife for that {-) {-) {-) (not currently in the vicinity ;))
For me it's scalpels and knives at work, 2 people, 2 scalpels, for about a day, then 1 scalpel. We manage with one scalpel for a few weeks, buy another and hej presto one goes missing - usually the new one ??? Maybe we should just resign ourselves to working with one scalpel and one knife......

We have similar at work with pens. I go and get a handfull from the stationary cupboard, put them in the holder in the control room, and within 10 mins we are searching for pens!

No. You will inevitably lose them immediately before use.
There is a theory that all "lost" pencils and biros have formed a huge herd, and can be found next to the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Can't help you out with the mystery of your pencils going walkabout, but I can show you what happens to our office girl's pens when she leaves them unattended...

1/ it'll save you loosing those bloody erasers as well,
2/ tie a string to the said pencil and anchor string to desk.

What everyone is witnessing is SOTT.
Small Object Time Travel.
This theory originates from my friend, Cliff Shaw, since passed on and traveling the ether himself.
The theory as stated postulates thatTime travel is possible.
Small objects, pencils, pens, car keys, hobby knives, wallets etc., can
all seemingly disappear from where you placed them and travel through time.
When they have finished, they reappear where you left them.
And that is exactly where you find them in the future.

Of course, in France we do things differently! My oval cross-section carpenters pencil still manage to roll away into dark corners and my most comfortable screwdriver refuses to stay on the rack where it has its own place clearly outlined in paint.
However, it's my wife who goes missing very often! The house is long and the garden even longer and so when I look for my wife I seldom find her immediately. I call out her name asking where she is and if I am lucky I get the reply, "Here" which tells me nothing about her location but does at least acknowledge she exists!
