There have been a number of posts in the past on how to taper dowel to make spars and masts. People can find it a bit tedious or difficult.
But there is another way! ;D
Down here in the sunny South we have a chain of cheap book/artist materials shops called "The Works". There may be some branches in the outer darkness, North of Watford but I haven't noticed them.
They will sell you packs of cheap paintbrushes with a variety of long tapered handles which are ideal for use as masts and spars on smaller models, and also with larger ones if you set them into appropriately sized tubing.
Never do things the hard way when you can employ a bit of low cunning!

luckily I have never had to rig a sailing ship or thames barge, and i'd have never thaught of using paint brushes!

Old knitting needles, both wooden and metal, can be quite usefull for masts and derricks etc.
