Title: Orange 'dayglow' paint on wheelhouses
Post by: meechingman on August 11, 2006, 11:04:48 am
Anyone know the current rules/regulations regarding the orange paint often found at the top of wheelhouses/bridges? I'me repainting my tugs in 'house' colours and the wheelhouses are next. Neither have the orange paint [their real live counterparts don't have either] so I'm in two minds as to whether to go orange or not. Any ideas, anyone, and what is the best orange to use?

I think originally it was for high viz. in ice ie the Baltic (as seen on my last ship on the left) It was a special paint which always looked rubbish with patches no matter how carefully it was painted. I don't think there are any regulations regarding its use

best regards

It certainly helps with spotting the model on the pond...
I have painted a few of my tugs & workboats with high vis paint...
A wee tip if you decide to do so...Paint the area first with white matt paint...It gives the day-glo paint a better look when finished...

I believe that the use of dayglo orange paint on wheelhouse roofs and  on the transom was imposed on passenger vessels following the Marchioness disaster on the Thames some years back. certainly all Thames launches have an orange panel on the transom and all ferries have it above their wheelhouses ( but not aft). It's obviously an aid to visibility in poor conditions. And yes, when applying dayglo paint, always use a white base.

HUMBROL DO A DAY GLO ORANGE PAINT CALLED ' BLAZE' - AS POINTED OUT  ALWAYS USE MATT WHITE AS A BASE COAT, THE HUMBROL ORANGE  BLAZE IS GREAT BUT MIX IT AND MIX IT LOADS MORE- ITS QUITE A GRAINY PAINT...BUT THE RESULTS ARE SPOT ON !

I applied my dayglow by using a brush and a spray can lid.  sprayed into the lid and them brushed it on.  it worked (just about)

Quite right Colin. After the Marchioness disaster all passenger vessels on the Thames had to have a orange panal on there stern for visability, it also had to be reflective.  During the later 1990s passenger boat companies started to complain that it was making there boats look a mess.  After this the PLA Changed the rules so that they no longer had to have orange and could instead have any color but it had to be reflective and could be easily seen.

Many boats on the river now have grey reflective areas instead.

that would be great, the images and reference i have leave alot to be desired !

the model iis still  in build, so still got alot of work to do.. the vessel was the ex- dorset police launch, its built on the lochin 33 GDSV hull ( brede lifeboat)- it was re engined in 1995  and then stationed on the thames as part of the marine support unit from wapping...

i will pm you, i have an image of the boat from about 1998 on the thames- i can send it across to you then so you can take a look, sadly the boat was decomissioned a while ago so imformation is sketchy to say the least !

i can find out a fair bit on when it was with the dorset force, but the trail goes fairly cold when it moved to the Met !

thanks for your help

Day-glo paint is of course available in matt finish and looks much better than the gloss stuff....much less patchy!
Also...if you undercoat with matt yellow, the orange is much brighter, previous lessons with home made pike floats coming to the fore here.  ;D
