Title: JJC Old Smokey - Converted for twin funnels
Post by: AlanB on April 12, 2006, 09:22:33 pm
This was a recent conversion on the excellent JJC Smoke Generator "Old Smokey"

As the basic unit has only one outlet for the steam /smoke and as the model I was fitting it in had two funnels, I had to do a bit of plumbing.

It was a case of fitting a standard T fitting to the end of the unit and 2 right angle fittings on the end of the T fitting.
Then drilling out the solid funnels and running 15mm plastic piping up through them and connecting the whole lot together.
Plastic tubing was used throughout and standard fittings from the local DIY store are ideal.

It works well when connected to the JJC Cat Turbo Diesel sound module and the speed controller.

All in a very nice piece of kit, puts the old oil burning ones to shame.

This link shows a quick video of the unit just after I fitted it.?

(You might have to let the clip download fully and play it again to get the correct sound)

The model is an Mobile Model Marine Portgarth, nearly finished now as the clip was taken over a month ago.

Holy Smoke, Batman!!!

That is an amazing piece of work.  Well done.  The sounds came through perfectly.

Now I'm green with envy...

Alan,

Very Very Nice,

Am thinking of installing a sound system in my boat. Could you post the dims of the master module or do you have JJC web address.

Many thanks Colin H.

Thanks Doug,

Just what I needed.

Maybe some one can help with another query. On the now defunct MB forum (same thread as JJC) there was a web site address to a supplier of made to measure leads, battery packs etc. I cant even remember the name but they had a good web site and I was making up an order when the forum vanished. Yes I should have made a note of the address but I did not expect the MB forum to disappear ??? ??? ???.

Thanks in advance yours Colin H.

If its the same people who exhibit at Weymouth its Model Power I think their website is WWW.modelpower.co.uk
Speaking of Weymouth model boat show I wonder what is going to happen to it as the Olympics is there 2012 and I assume the council will want to re-develop the place before then so I assume its days are numbered. Pity its allways a good event.

I'have a question.  May be not so good of one, but I still wonder.  The JJC smoke thingy uses 'fog' or atomized water for smoke.  I've thought of adding one to a boat of mine made of wood.  Would routing the 'smoke' through untreated wood funnels cause the untreated wood to swell?  Making holes to route the 'smoke' wouldn't be that much trouble but treating the exposed wood would be a nightmare.  I can think of ways around all that but I'n not sure I wanna do that either... lazy, you know.

When I fitted the unit to my tug, I also thought about routing the "smoke" through the funnels, then I also had the same thought about the condensation building up in the funnel.

My end solution was to drill out the funnels and insert 15mm plastic piping, apparently metal piping is no good as it builds up with condensation and slows the flow of smoke.

I would go for making a hole in the funnel and inserting plastic piping attached to the JJC unit. It keeps the unit as one and reduces the chance of any dripping condensation destroying electrical equipment.

The main reason for using plastic tubing up from the vapour generator is to allow condensed water to flow back down into the vapour generator for re-use. So push fit fittings are prefered. By making sure you run the tubing up to the funnel you are able to refill easily and you worn't get any condensation in the boat other than what is already occuring in the bildges.

some fitting hints.... if you are running small bore tubing for the exhaust stubs, run 22mm dia tubing as far as practical before reducing the final diameter, If you are fitting the steam version with a large diameter funnel, bring the 22mm tube up to within 40mm from the top and the 'smoke' will fill the diameter of the funnel and look natural.

regards

Jim

Yes I, too, would like to see the video or at least several photos of your results or from anyone else who has purchased JJC's Old Smokey.   I live in China & cannot access JJC's website, probably due to the bloody internet filters here that we have to deal with.  >:(

I've heard some amazing comments & am considering it for a Revell Flower corvette conversion currently underway.
