Title: Hose Reel
Post by: Umi_Ryuzuki on August 24, 2008, 11:11:35 pm
I needed a 1/48 scale hose reel for my SDM tug,...
So a thrashed out an etching mask, and then etched the hose reel, along
with an oversized vent to cover a newly mounted cooling fan in the superstructure.

Neat stuff, how about a few lessons on how to etch brass?

I would be interested in that, I have always wondered how it is done.

I got my instructions from Starship Modeler.com.
And I did a mini tutorial on RCgroups back in 2005, here
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=447591

And duplicated it on a local club newsletter website here.
http://groups.msn.com/NauticalSocietyOfOregonandModelShipwrights/photoetching.msnw

I wasn't sure how the developers worked, and the UV light exposure was accomplished for
photo etching, so I used the Tekniks blue heat transfer film instead. I have been told that
a flourescent lamp provides plenty of UV for photo transfers of etching masks. It might be
something to try in the future. Same process just different method of applying the masking.

For the hose reel and this particular vent, I masked both sides of the 0.005 thick brass sheet.
Once the mask is transfered to the "Peel and Press" I cut it out, and line up the two masks
against a window, or lamp, then tape them together across one edge. I then slip these over
the edge of the brass and run them through a laminator.(an iron might work in a pinch.)

Masking both sides of the part speeds up the etching process. Trimming the excess brass off
close to the masking also speeds up the etching process as the acid can work the edge as well
as the surface.
