Hello all.
Modelling time is about to become limited due to things like moving house, mother-in-laws close to karking it, small chldren arriving and all sorts of other botherments.
So rather than swing into a great big build, a springer tug seems like fun.
However, and this may be deeply sacriligious, I don't really think springers with their flat bow are very "pretty".
So I was wondering if anyone has built a springer with a poity bow? i.e - slighly more boat shaped than barge shaped.
Doesn't have to be needle sharp pointy - it could just be a bit rounded?
Would such a thing still classify as a springer?
Are you lot about to say bad words about me and throw bricks in my direction for talking heresy?

Hi
Pointy bow " NOT " a SPRINGER O0
8" X 18" + 6v + 540 motor + 4" Sq Rudder looks like a SPRINGER ;)

Mutiny! Mutiny! Call out the militia!!! >>:-(

No not going to throw bricks at you or even think of accusing you of heresy as I agree that the flat bow doe's look like a >>:-( barge. But the rules are pretty strict in the size and the shape as Timo2 replied. This does not stop you from building something based on the springer and going in your own direction. The fun of the springer is the superstructure that you come up with, this is something that you can do any thing you want to with.

Yes, Springers are fun and can provide many hours of enjoyment, both in the building and in the water...
Thats the 'beauty of a Springer, its uglyness... O0
A Springer is a Springer, if you alter the basic 18"x8" (or metric equivalent) box in to another shape... then its NOT a springer!... >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
By the way, a 'boat' doesnt have to have a pointy bow to be a boat... :P

The way i see it (after building 6 and am currently designing my 7th):
1/ If you build a basic (square sided) box, 8 x 18", to the PNW drawings and add power, prop, rudder etc as per the PNW drawings, you have a Standard Springer.
2/ If you build a basic (square sided) box, 8 x 18", to the PNW drawings and add power, prop, rudder / kort etc over and above the PNW drawings, you have a Super Springer.
3/ If you build a box (Square sided) that is a multiple of 8 x 18", you have a Springer, but its a Big Springer.
4/ If you build something out of your head, that isnt to the PNW drawings, (that has angled sides or has a pointy bow), you dont have a Springer....
... although....
Some experiments with a pointy bow Springer would be interesting to see if it still tries to dive... ::)

If it's only the superstructure that is different for each 'springer', then why not build a springer hull, but anything above 1/4" from the deck can be whatever shape you like.
so is it a springer if the bow sitting on the deck is pointy? :)
-
What would it be if the pointy bit was part of the superstucture?

You beat me to it by seconds there. Great minds?

Could you use the springer hull as a floating platform for siting any thing on top, say the star ship enterprise or the large submersible with a oilrig on it - know where i'm going with this O0
-
It is my undersatanding that anything can go above the basic shape, so a pointy superstructure would be fine, or any shape would be fine..
having said all that Ripslider, if your boat is not going to compete with other Springers then jsy build a boat based on one.....Then it matters not!!

Hi Ripsilder
O great leader ( Martin ) build a Point nose Springer

Nice lifeboat interpretation. O0
This was my interpretation of a Damen 2810 springer... Big round bow. ;)

OK - well. It would seem that the "pointy springer" is a dead duck.
Next question then:
Having read the rules again, I see that there are a set of dimensions - 18"x8", and a hull shape that must be adhered to. However, I see nothing that says it must be a monohull.
Would a trimirane therefore be allowed?
I'm thinking of a 4" main body, 2 inch long out riggers and 2 floats. All would fit the 18 x 8" rule, would only have one prop, one rudder, and all three sections could follow the same hull shape.
I'm guessing there is a ruling on this as well, but I really like trimarines - even if I can't spell the word.

Seeing as the rules say it has to be 18"X8" box of a particular shape, that means its a 'monohull box'...
If you do make it a trimaran, then where will you be putting the batteries?...
-
They could go in either the centre hull or, more probably, a gel cell in either "wing" - should be plenty of space I reckon.
-
Not having entered any Springer contests, I built this, I don't know if its legal, Toes could clarify I'm sure.
I cut the corners off the bow.
It will still dive with the batteries in the lowest part of the hull, Batteries moves well aft and its perfect.
