Title: which gease to use on plastic gears?

Hello.


Very quick question: I have a a gearbox made up of plastic gears that could do with a bit of a grease.

I've previously put lithium grease on plastic, and it went a bit odd. So I was wondering if there is a prefered type of grease to use?

Gears will be being driven by 2x speed 600 motors, so probably going to be moving fairly fast, so grease will need to be good in high speed applications

I tend to use white silicon grease, it just seems to stick to the surfaces better....

Silicone seems to work well but use it sparingly, you only need just enough to leave a thin film on the plastic gears for it to be effective. If you pack the gearbox with a viscous grease you will destroy the gears as the pressure build up between the teeth at high speed with actually cause the teeth to break off as well as creating high loads on the motor, I guess you know this already but just thought I would throw it in.

I can see the point about pressure build up. Never occurred to me.

Plastic gears will be damaged by grease (pressure and stress to the gears itself) so silicone-oil (available in modeling-stores meant for shock-absorbers) will do a perfect job in that particular case.

I use Tamiya's grease in all my race cars and buggies, bit expensive but well worth it.

Very high quality stuff like this grease wont damge plastic.

Shock grease is far too thin, even the thick stuff, and comes off straight away.

Andy, the silicon-oil will lay down as a smooth layer and fills the finest gaps. I use this since 15 years or more on my scale 1:5 cars- they do 24000 rpm and 75 mph, never had any problem and the greasing effect from the oil lasts very long.

I tryed the stuff on one of my cars and it came straight off again...

Andy, then you had probably the wrong stuff...... the one here sticks like sh** on a shoe. Wish that my superglue would do all the same....  :D
