Hi all,
Just had a thought, can we create a map of all things Model Boating?
Clubs, Lakes, Events, Manufactures, Museums, Modellers...... anything really!
I've had a quick look on Google maps - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115439289302912786204.000455fd039eb4a7d09fe (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115439289302912786204.000455fd039eb4a7d09fe)
Would anyone like to volunteer to look into it a bit further ( and manage the input and map uploads?! )
-
When I asked a few weeks ago for Members to signal their location a few joined in.
Personally, I would find it fascinating to see how far Mayhem has spread. The possibilities are endless as Martin proposes....come on folk, a volunteer is wanted.
Roger in France.
-
This sounds like a great Idea , I have used google maps to plan holidays and
spy on locate family dwellings where I used to live.
If no one else wants it I will give it a go.
TLB
-
Try this one then:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115439289302912786204.000455fd039eb4a7d09fe
-
Richard,
Tried that and found it very interesting, but how do we add to it??
-
... I'm hoping 'The long build' will manage it! O0
...or you can post your location (post or Zip code is best) a Tittle and quick description (Website) and we'll add to the map.
-
Access the map by clicking on the link.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115439289302912786204.000455fd039eb4a7d09fe
You do need a Gmail account to post. E'mail address and password needed.
Click on Edit.
The icons will appear at top of map
Click on the icon of the marker and then double click on the map. Type details in box that appears. Then click on OK then click on save.
-
Richard,
Edit is not an option given. It may be that as the map creator only you have this option.
Martin,
A zip or post code is okay for the Uk but outside, some of them cover a large area. I know mine does, so I would have to mark my place on a map and send it to Richard or the Long Build so they can transfer the details.....Seems a bit long winded to me.....but as a famous man says......What do know?
Barry
-
Well there are several mapping options, 'yahoo local', Google Earth, MSN Live maps and they all require (rightly) logon authentication.
Anyone can create a Google account (Gmail) and can be invited to the Model Boat Mayhem to "Collaborate" (but of the good kind!) and you can move your "placemark"s to precisely where you want to.
If anyone know of something easier, better, faster, let us know!
-
Did you sign in Barry ?
Edit should be on the left hand side of the map. O0
-
ok logged in to google but can't see any way to edit map.
Do I need to be invited ??
Richard
-
Send me your E'mail address in PM and I'll send you an invite.
Could you then let us know if it works ?
-
Richard,
Yes I was signed in and edit does not appear. If you think about it it will quite rightly only let the maps owner edit it, otherwise "Mayhem" would ensue. (Forgive the pun).
Barry
-
Barry Send me your E'mail address in PM and I'll send you an invite.
Could you then let us know if it works please?
-
Interesting stuff.
Dicky, I'm still not sure what to do. Can you run it through, nice and s-l-o-w one more time?
1) Do I actually need to download Google Maps? If so, where from? How does it work? Is it like Google Earth?
2) How/where do I get a Gmail account?
3) What then?
Help!
-
Richard,
Pm on its way.
Barry
-
Hi
Got the link via googlemail, takes me straight to the map but still does not appear to have any edit option..
Richard
-
Have you logged in Richard ?
-
hi all
tried the link I received via email from Dicky and still Ziltch - wont allow me to join the club, the select few :-\ :'( been all over me personal profile, see if I can find an edit button - cant even find one......just wondering if we have to have an invite direct from Martin, our leader.....
aye
john
-
Hi
Yes logged in, no joy.
I have attached screen shot to show options
Richard
-
If you PM me your Gmail account name, I'll will shoot signs you all up as "collaborators" .... sorry, watched 'Dad's Army' too many times! {-)
-
Right you should all have access to the edit / add placemark options now...
Just looking again, I see there is an option to "Allow anyone to edit this map", don't quite like
the sound of that just yet, I think we need a little more experience first.
Martin
-
You mean you've just sent out 2147 e'mails. WOW dedication !! ::)
-
Just put one in for Furness MBC - worked fine.
Martin, are you going to put a link somewhere so we can all find the map easily?
Ian
-
Yes, good idea Ian!
Suggestions anyone?
-
You mean you've just sent out 2147 e'mails. WOW dedication !! ::)
Nothings too much for you guys! ..... literally, nothing! {-)
-
When I get the link, Martin.....can I put my little arrow/pin into my part of France, please?
Roger in France.
-
Hi All
That worked O0 O0 just added Basingstoke Lake
Richard
-
Well it still won't work for me. Logged in....Can view the map but cannot edit it.....
Barry
-
You are using the right e'mail address Barry. Did you give it to Martin or is it the one he had already ?
-
He should have it. Better pm him I think..
Barry
pm away.....
-
Editing the map is not that easy it seems...
I opened the email link which then opened the map. Above the map title it says Collaborate, I clicked the edit button next to this and it opened a range of options on the top of the map. I then picked the pushpin and placed on the map. Screen print attached

Map is looking busy already
Not sure why some people are having problems, I found it a piece of cake, however this could be because I have a google email address as well.
I loaded up the address provided by Martin & DD in this thread and then logged into my account , and made the map a "My map " in my account" then just added the post code into the search and then just added a picture and changed the Icon, the whole thing took less than a minute.
Regards Footski and Roger in France could it be that for what ever reason the google site will not allow editing from outside the UK ? just a thought.
I think that once it is up a running this could be a really useful aid to locate clubs and venues.
One thing however I would be cautious about, is putting the location of your address on the site for obvious reasons, particulary if Th UK site does go down the same route as the US where you can vertualy do a 360 tour of the house from the ground.
Larry
-
I'm having the same problem as Footski and Roger (no Edit button) - and I'm in Cheshire.
Malc
-
I have no specific edit button either , I just search for the location and then a small pop up appears to let me then change things but no specific edit button, unless the changes I have made can only be seen by me ?. Can you see the runcorn club on the map ?.
It appears also that I could alter the other locations which is a bit worring.
-
Yes, The Runcorn club can be seen, but there is no sign of an edit or collaboration button...
-
How about under Links at the bottom of the main page! O0

Check all the maps shown as examples on this thread and you will see only ONE with Europe , no UK only England and you will get a clue. Whether they are only examples doesnt matter, a UK map would be a bit more thoughtful.
-
Have you tried zooming out?
-
I zoomed out, scrolled around, zoomed in, and found my street in China. 8)
I can then click on sattelite and look at the pool in our development.
Can't quiet zoom in to see me drinking cans of Abbot Ale on a deck chair though.

s'funny, isn't that you in the blue shirt?

What are you on about ? Why would a UK map be more thoughtful for a world wide forum ? ::)

It's certainly not Abbot's Ale - it looks more like Tiger Beer to me? {-) {-)

Correct , you take my point. Why in the UK did we not use a UK map for the samples, only an English one? Just being pedantic,I`ll be better when I have my dram and a belly full of haggis and porridge, listened to a few pibrochs on the chanter and danced a couple of reels. {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) Nice to see an Oriental location O0
-
Why not use an English one. Is there something wrong with anything English? It could have been a Spanish map, Welsh map or even a Scottish map....I fail to see what there is to get upset about >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
-
Arrow5
I think that i must be missing the point here?
Any chance you could explain this England versus UK map thing for me please?
As I see it, the map is of the whole planet, and locations can be added anywhere?
Malc
-
got the mappage open, but no edit button appears... ???
-
OK, try it now.
I've open the map to allow anyone to edit add placemarks to the map.
We'll see if it gets hit by any of the detritus on the internet over the weekend, if not we'll leave it open.

-
You do Martin. O0
-
Hey Martin,
Just a thought. If we all need a Google Account, why not contact them and see if they are prepared to sponsor the site in some way, aftyer all there can't be many world wide clubs, planning to keep in touch through their system.....It could just make a bob or two for our hard working leaders....Just a thought...
Barry

Hey Barry, have you bin messin wiv my ouse. >>:-(

Some of you seem to be offered a choice of "pins". I can only have the standard one.
What am I doing wrong?
Roger in France.
-
if you double click on the pin you are given a choice.
-
Once you've placed the pin on the map, if you click on the pin in the description box it should open a new selection box.
Snap!
-
OK, got it. But first you must click on the edit button and then open the dialogue box before you click on the pin to get the choice of icons.
My choice of pin icon reflects my avatar....it is not that I am single minded, hic!

Hello anyone out there in Mayhem land, I've just come across this post, is anyone still updating this map idea or did it die a death?

Hi Peachy, its still live but I don't know about 'kicking'!!
Might be nice for a few to update it (as I just have) before it ends in the "good ideas" cemetery.

I only use my i-phone at home, so it's a little awkward to navigate and I can't quite work out what to do, when I'm back at work on Monday I'll look again,

Old thread I know, but have just updated the map for Basingstoke Model Boat Club :-))
-
You can tag your club's location and details onto Google Maps.
Move your curser to the location where you want the pin and club name to appear on the map, right click and select "Add a missing place" from the drop down menu. Add as much detail as you want and in a week or so you will be emailed to say the Geo_tag is now working. Your club can then be searched for on the map.
