Intrepid is nearing Liverpool for breaking, towed by Ormesby Cross.

I took this shot at the recent Meet Your Navy event at Portsmouth which shows Intrepid in the background. I think the taxpayers probably got their money's worth out of Fearless and Intrepid over the years.

For thoes who have not heard yet she was towed away for Birkenhead to be scrapped last Friday.

Arrived Mersey today. I saw her leave Portsmouth last week. A shame to see both of them go.

according to the BBC she is NOT going to be scrapped........she is going to be RECYCLED.........is that the "green" way of putting it??? ::) :'(
Or is it a cynical way of trying to pull the wool over our eyes! >>:-(

Just out of interest, I saw a report at least ten years ago which stated that Intrepid was in a dreadful state internally due to corrosion and was only being kept afloat to provide spares for Fearless.

I understand that was the reason she was laid up first. Once laid up she provided spares for Fearless. Fearless is no more, scrapped in Ghent earlier this year.

Sad to see a magnificent vessel being recycled. When the RCN did away with the HMCS Bonaventure, the smart DND lads in Ottawa sold it to Japan for scrap metal. In return Japan sent back 1000 new Toyota Corollas, thus creating the flood of Japanese import automobiles to the Great White North, mind you they didn't stand up to our winters very well back then!

It's actually at Langton Dock, IIRC, or one of those around that area, Canada, etc. Which as any one from Bootle would jkknow, is on the LIVERPOOL side of the rubicon, not the wrong side as reported.
I think it's actually outside the offices of the company that's scrapping it? Anyone?

I could use this as an opportunity to thank The Royal Navy & HMS Fearless in particular for transporting me and my thirst around the world during the period 1968 to 1972.
In spite of being a Pongo at that time, I admired the professionalism of all I met during that commission, and enjoyed tremendously their company both afloat and ashore.

Forget the sentiments guys. The pair of them were old and worn out. With the best will in the world a ship built in 1965 is really past its sell-by date. Her equipment will be totally out of date, no matter how many refits / updates she has had. But the killer may be that she may still be burning heavy oil (FFO), and her outdated sanitary systems could well preclude her being allowed access into many "foreign" ports. "Brittania" had similar problems. But all ships come to outlive their usefulness and so have to go. BY.

Sorry for the quality... it had been raining and I hadn't noticed some cxxp on the front lens.
There it is... amoung the coal heaps and rusting steel! It's outside the offices to a scrap metal company. Now if they aren't the ones scrapping it, that HAS to be one of the biggest FUs there's ever been! ;-)

They were out of date in 82! I was on Type 12's then & Fearless & Intrepid were no better equipped, manual Radar, Seacat - I might hit the target -missiles & wessex helicopters, but like the 12's, loved by the ships co'.

Do we know how long she will stay there before scrapping commences?
I have a 1/96 Fearless which needs some minor detailing finishing and would like to get down and have a look, mind you i dont know if most things got taken off while she was at Portsmouth?

I don't know if these are any help. They are of the model of Fearless held by the Britannia Naval College at Dartmouth.

Russ, it's a shame to see such a nice model go unfinished, why don't you grit your teeth and set aside the next week/2 weeks/month/etc, to finish it finally?

Ok...just a little too much out of scale for me I think...........might go for 1:87 HO but might see what they look like when the time comes.
