...Hi Guys...
Just a Wee Idea... Especially for Martin & Moderators to read...
What about setting up a" Swap or Offer" Section on the Forum...
It could go beside the Sales & Wants Sections...
If you have a Model Boat related item that you no longer need, Post it on & see what you get offered for it(within reason) or post a "wish item" that you would like to swap it for...Obviously Common Sense & Simple Rules Prevail...
Its just another way of making our Forum more useful in this current Credit Crunching World...
...What Do You Think Guys ?...
...Best Regards...Norry...

What a great idea. :-))
Let me start it off ....... I'd like a small electric circular saw, suitable for cutting deck planking.
I have a surplus of small motors suitable for a springer.

Making offers sounds pretty much like an aution. Highest bidder gets it.
If you would like to invite offers youu could always list a price and add ONO.
-
Good point, Mankster. Mine above looks like a straight swop, but is'nt.
I figured it was just a mention of the product, with view to discussion between parties to move the gear on with cash balances. (does that make sense?). %)

how would it work. IE one person puts an item up for trade/swap . then any one Else make offers via pm or open forum. Put correct me if i am wrong . but on the sales thread if i want to sell an item IE a boat at XXX price i get offers via pm. Now who's to say it has to be cash if some wanted my boat they might offer a drill etc. So on the sales thread could we not say cash only or willing to trade interested in XXXXX.

...Hi Guys...
Its just an idea to help get bits & bobs that we may need or get rid of bits we no longer want...Its not meant as a way for people to make money out of the hobby....Thats what the other sections are for...
Its not like an auction because an auction has a specific end time...If you like or need what is offered then its up to you to make your offer one that is going to be accepted & end the posting there & then...After a time the posting can be removed to make way for others...
...

Dear Norry,
I think the swap idea is brilliant, but the offers idea could be just a touch 'complicated' - possibly.
If for example I hypothetically had spare sheets of deck planking for a destroyer, and asked for a swap for either Deans of Haynes deck fittings suitable for a WW2 British navy vessel, or would either swap for, say, a suitable length of 7amp cable and a suitable number of Tamiya connectors this I could see as being a very good and useful facility. The trouble is as soon as money is involved it gets more 'formal', and really comes under the Sales Section I would imagine?
Well done for a good idea. I hope it might be considered.

Yes it's being looked at as we speak.
Basically the Sales / Wants section already has that facility and you can just state what you want to "Swap".
As this could be fraught with dissatisfied trades, we need a few ground rules in place first as Mayhem WILL not provide any sort of arbitration service afterwards.

I think its a great idea. My 2pennies worth sounds like this:
Have: a 1/50scale tug boat hull. Want 1/32 speed boat hull,
Or. Have; Loads of balsa. Wants Loads of Mahogany.
That sort of thing. If some one has something else they would like to offer, which is not the wanted item, they could offer it on the forum. It could just be that someone that wants that has the thing the other guy wants, or some one else wants. Following me.
Lets say I have a 1/50 tug hull and want a 1/32 speed boat hull.
Fred has motors and wants a tug hull.
Charlie has a SBhull, and wants motors.
I send tug to Fred. Fred sends motors to Charlie, and he sends the SBhull to me Every ones happy. I think %%
This will mean to get the best out of it, all wants and haves should be aired on the forum, and not by PM.
If you want to sell something go to the sell or buy section.

Sorry folk but it is just not as simple as that.
Mayhem cannot be a party to the transactions which it would be if we allowed Members to negotiate within the Forum. Martin and we Moderators just do not have time and/or skills to sort out the inevitable problems and disattisfaction.
We have discussed it in much detail. We see the attractions. We would have liked to open it up for a free for all. However, we have decided that Members can put their swaps and wants in the sales section but all subsequent negotiations and agreements must be done other than in the Forum. We already spend many hours every day trying to keep some semblance of order on here. So please do understand our decision.

Well, I hate to say this, but, this has been done a long time ago here on the Forum - just before the first Mayhem Bash - I advertised I had a multi-channel receiver to swap and what I required was a HiTec receiver in exchange.
I am sure it was Omra85 (I think it was) we exchanged no problems - my end of the bargain is still working very well - and I have never received any complaints.
So why do the moderators need to be involved - just keep it dead basic - SWAPS - use one's own initiative for the value of the swap. I mean if you asking for a receiver - of a particular type - as I was - you have to offer something of the equivalent value.
Simple as that folks.
No need for moderators to be involved.
Not at all.

Why is it not that simple??
It appears to me that the members involved just want somewhere to post the items and discuss the swaps. So explain how Mayhem is involved when all that happens is the messages appear in the appropriate section, and people discuss their swap needs.
It all seems to be a bit of, we did not think of it so you can not do it by the moderators.

As Roger says, "Members can put their swaps and wants in the sales section but all subsequent negotiations and
agreements must be done other than in the Forum." (PM's are OK) - which has always been the case.
It's all OK if everything goes smoothly, but if not, what happens then?
-
Brian,
We aren't trying to be killjoys, anything but! Please don't make assumptions as to our motives, you should know better than that.
However there is some concern about transactions that don't go to plan. Expectations are not always met. Any acrimony could spill over onto the Forum which would then involve a degree of Moderation. Not something we want to be involved in.
I think it's simple too. You simply put up what you have to swap and what you are looking for and anyone interested gets in touch by PM.Then you sort it out between you. I think the multiway swaps envisaged by Hagar could get rather overcomplicated. A bit like a housing chain. One pulls out and the whole thing collapses.
Just my thoughts anyway.

Could ask what happens if a sale goes wrong?
Surely it would only take a couple of rule to ensure any complaints were kept off the forum, Roger is good at those.

I would be very careful, I have a feeling that by law the forum may be held responsible if things went wrong >>(
Some detailed research is needed

And that's it.
Martin.
I think this rule is OK. I have implanted a swap & wants section and our rule goes a bit further: the responsibility of any sale or swap lies between the involved users. Thats it and it works with little moderation.

senior moments mate - it was actually Young at 64 who swapped with me when I posted Omra - it wasnt - it was definitely Young at 64 or even 65 {-) {-) {-) senior moments, who would be without em {-) {-) {-)

...Hi Guys...
I am going to get on my soapbox for a minute or two, So stand by...
I suggested this swap section as a further addition to an almost perfectly run Model Boat Forum...
The one thing that bugs me & makes it an "almost" perfectly run M. B. F. is the way a Posting or Topic is hijacked by the members who constantly interrupt a serious subject & start spouting nonsense that has nothing to do with the original posting...For Instance...
If you are not happy with your Wife then put her on a Wife Swapping Forum..Its Common Sense...
As I,ve said before on the Forum...Keep the Postings on course & If you have Nonsense to spout then spout it on the Nonsense Spouting Forum...
The Swap Section, As i have said earlier is just a way to get rid of boat related items that you no longer need & maybe get the bits that you do need in exchange...Its not for making profit for any individual...I have Today negotiated a swap with another member in a very professional way & we are both very happy with our swap items...Now its up to The Royal Mail to complete the task...
Right get me down from this box before i get dizzy...
Thanks Martin & The Moderators for considering this idea...Now lets hope it all goes smoothly...
...Best Regards & Thanks...Norry...

I still think my idea's a good'n :-))
-
Likewise I think the idea is first class. From what I have seen, Mayhemer's are an honest bunch, and the likelihood of something 'going wrong' is remote. However, there could easily be one hard and fast rule: If either party is not happy, the exchange is cancelled without question and the items sent back.
If I might have 1:96 3 rail stanchions to swap for 1:96 general deck fittings for WW2 GB destroyers, does it mean I have to p.graph each one of them? In the same light, does the vendor have to p.graph each an every deck fitting? Both parties would know exactly what the items would look like once the mfr. was known, so there is no need really for p.graphs in the first place as both and everybody knows what the things look like. Quality is the only real issue, but this is between the two parties and comes down to new and used. If a Mayhemer said an item was new and Deans or Haynes mfd. I would know exactly what to expect, if used, well "you does your swap you takes your chance".
At the end of the day the Rule mentioned in my first para. would carry everything. No exceptions, no further griping, just all returned and that's that. I do think it's a good idea, it will be interesting to see how it develops.
Regards, Bernard

...Hi Guys...
I would like to thank Tugboyben for answering my request for a Hectoperm Motor for my new Tug-Towing Tug...
The Swap-Deal has now been completed & both parties are very happy with their new boat bits...
Thanks Very Much, Jason & All The Best Mate...I hope to meet you some day at a Model Regatta or Show somewhere around the place...
