Are you going to run her on 1 or 2 shafts,
I ran mine and Sovremini on 2 Shafts.
Bob
-
going to run her on two shafts with two speed controllers just using cassette type motors through scratch built gear boxes
-
There is an interesting review of this kit if you follow the link http://www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html
I did find but have lost the link with a recent pc crash a web page of a guy in the USA who has converted one to R/C. He did mention some fit problems.
Hope this helps

I used 2mm Graupner shafts with prop-shop smallest props, still had to reduce the voltage to 4.8 though.
I used 2 reciever packs connected in parallel via a "Y" lead, this provided just the right ballast too,

Hey Bob,
Your Russian Destroyer must be different to mine as the one I have is spelt Sovremenny...
Roy
-
Roy, Scott's must be a different destroyer as well.... :D
-
im just a common hard working lad from newcastle upon tyne theyy div'nt teech us to speel up here but for the record mine is a sovremenny class destroyer kit from trumpeter . ;D
-
And dont speak russian, and it had been a long day.
but
WHO CARES, I dont, heheheeh
Bob
-
I used the equipment from a r/c motor cycle and twin Tamtech motors(and it worked!)
The kit isn,t quite right as there only a few with twin rudders, one of which was USS Little which I used for my model which had a cracking camouflage pattern
-
Bob,
Maybe you better have a cup of coffee mate and your spelling lessons will come back to you.. ;D ;D
Roy
-
Lots of coffee, and long days at the keyboard.
This working from home isnt all its cracked up to be. Hence the number of times I log in on here for a break.
Should have known better though, she still isnt finished, some kit bashing still to do and is sitting 3 feet away from me now!!!
Must get a big bucket of interest for her or or she will be getting sold on uncompleted.

Here's a link to my Fletcher. There's photos and a link to some night running with the running lights on: http://www.subpirates.com/viewtopic.php?t=2767
Power is a pair of Johnson J250's in series and direct drive and an old 5-cell 1700mah nicad pack that was laying around. Too fast but loads of fun.
If you want more information let me know and I'll post it. Oh, and I second Pat's suggestion about joining the Fletcher Yahoo group. Nice guys there.

Hi Scott
i did some research on this model way back in the mid 1980 the Lindberg kit is U.S.S. Melvin pennant number 680. This ship was scrapped in 1974 if i remember the kit instructions tell you paint the model in Green's and browns this is not correct the ship was painted in measure 21 overhaul navy blue hence the ship was called the blue devil. You should find on the transfer sheet a blue devil figure try to keep down the weight when converting to r/c operation and i would only sail in light conditions hope this helps.
Stan ;)
-
Punctuation aside, Stan's right about the sailing attributes of this boat. Keep the weight centered, low and a bit forward as the stern is very low. At speed the stern is below the waterline and wake! Be careful in the turns as well. She leans in the turns. It's a fun boat but don't get too crazy with it. It's a wet one so put some foam in it just in case. There's an Yahoo group for the model and it's not a bad idea to join it. Nice group of guys.

I was thinking of getting one of these - anyone built one?
-
Here one I saw yesterday.
Throw away the motor and gearbox in the kit!
-
Try Googling it - apparently it needs a lot of work to produce an accurate model.
-
The builder, chap in the blue hat, said that he had to add a 1/4 inch to the depth of the hull to get the right profile.

There's a Yahoo! group dedicated to doing just such a thing:

I did one of these... fond memories of my first build and I used the in-the-box greabox, props, shafts and rudders... for a day or two anyway. Then I was always replacing the stripping cogs or forcing the cog on the motor shaft to engage the other cog properly (Did I meantion cog stripping?]
You are supposed to be able to place a cam on this gearbox and this cam pushes against a long bbar that connects all the turrets. So in theory, as it sails every so often as the gearbox moves the cog to the right place, it nudges the cam which nudges the bar which nudges the turrets a bit to one side, next time it's to the other...
It's 3ft long but looks small 'on the water'. The full deck is removable but fix that and take the superstructure off instead. Some of the parts are OK but some need replacing. That US 'dockyard' shop has a 'etched' conversion kit for it which I think should make a great difference.
Serach youtube as some guy has put a ferrari engine in one and its like a speedboat around the lake. Guys! why is it always bigger or faster?

Maninthestreet you have a PM.
Roy

Man inthestreet...go Tamiya. The Missouri, Bismark..any of the 1/350th scale kits are nice and easy to build and modify to r/c.

man in the street, I have built one and threw away all the kit innards and replaced them with unit that was built for me by FLJ Dave of Action electronics, if you go to his site and look there you will find the unit and reccomendation setup, I followed this, fitted it and everything worked well first time and stills runs A.OK I never decide what I am going to put in my boats now, I just ask Dave and go by his advice. bigH

If you want a Flecher class destroyer,Revell are releasing one in 1/144 scale nearly 800mm in lenght. not designed for RC but I would think its possible to convert?

So did you decide on getting a Fletcher?
-
Greetings,
It is a good first build that you can learn from and modify as the time goes by. Yes it has some accuracy problems but then the molds for this kit are probably older than most of the people on this board. The way it comes from the factory is that it is steered by cogs and levers, these are the first thing that should go in the trash to be replaced with a good 2 or 3 channel radio. What is really nice about this kit is that you can get it in the water fairly quickly and have fun running it while you build your second model with all the bells and whistles. If it banged up a bit as you learn how to run a ship you will not mind as much as this is all about learning and having a whole lot of fun. So Go For it and then go for something more difficult.
Andre
over yonder in Portland Oregon :-)) :-)

It's been around for a long time now, has any got an unbuilt kit they can show us the quality of the mouldings?
-
I built one 12 years ago & was pleasantly surprised considering the age of the kit - the only thing I scrapped besides the running gear was that butt ugly mattress radar with was replaced with brass mesh.
If I was in the market for one today, I'd spend my money on the new Revell kit which will be much more detailed at around the same price.

I fully endorse those comments Ref Dave at ACTION Electronics......he has guided me back into R/C modeling and been a Guru in electronics.... of which I have scant knowledge.
All my gear comes from him as I trust him , and his advice has been pr oven sound on every occasion, but sadly he has no Steam Turbine sound generators either

Hi, I´m new to MBM however not new to boatbuilding. Here´s mine http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=688352. No it´s still not finished, the superstructure needs to be finished still and it had some issues with the smokestack and sealing of the ship. I´m also waiting to paint it, haven´t got an airbrush yet which would be ideal to do the camouflage with. Boo

Excellent read PkBoo! how good is the 'resistor' smoke unit?

Hi Martin, it works quite well although not extensively! On a windy day you won't see the white smoke {:-{ As I indicated I had some issues with it, the cigar tube it lays in had become so hot it melted the smokestack it was in <:( It has since then been repaired however I have to still figure out how to let the repair bulge "disappear" Thanks :-)) Boo
-
Keep us updated PkBoo, very intersting.
What other kits have you built / converted?
-
Martin, at the moment I have four sailing boats/ships, one Lindberg 1/32 PT109 is finished as PT357, one Lindberg 1/32 PT109 converted to a speed devil ("No-balls") is being blogged shortly on RCG, an almost finished Italeri 1/35 PT596 and an almost finished Fletcher. In boxes still, one Snowberry, one type VII sub and another Lindberg Fletcher. I was going to finish the sub by the end of this year when I got distracted by speed %%. The built of the sub is being blogged at RCG, I´m not sure yet what I´m going to post at MBM, I´m still kinda lurking here to see what I can contribute besides being invited by Duncan (Arrow5). Boo
