Title: Glue /Varnish

 Two questions
                   1,   What glue would you recommend to glue plastic (toe rails) to wood  (ply deck).
                   2,   How many coats of varnish should be enough to protect hull paintwork?

Replies:

1: dont know but would love to find out!
2: depends what you are varnishing over, is it a wood finish, has it been epoxied, or is it a painted finish? If wood, as many coats as it takes to get the finish you require - I used 7 coats on a riva. Over epoxy, probably 2 or 3 coats, over paint, probably 2 or 3 coats again.

As a general indication, its as many as required to get the finish you want.

If the wood is bare - epoxy (Araldite) , if its painted either epoxy or superglue.

Hi, on the glue question.  The best one I have used is Stablit Express for gluing wood to plastic.  It is a 2 part adhesive and lasts 10 mins or so when made up.

I have recently glued wood toe rails and they were about 1.5 mm square on a sailing boat.

I pinned them down.  I have some fine pins, the small ones are thinner than the usual 1 inch long ones.  I drilled the holes utilising the tiny drills in the small size drill packs that are easy to get.  Drilled them in situ and when the glue was dry pulled the pin out.
A dot of paint will cover the holes.

Hull paintwork and varnish.  Sunlight is one of the main causes of deterioration and discolouring.  So a cover will help.

For decks if possible, I put thinned varnish on with a pad of cloth over my finger.  I use 25% thinners with the varnish.  One of the problems is that too many coats of un-thinned varnish looks puddley.  So use a good quality one, I use Humbrol thinners.  I don't know if it is still available.  White spirit is not always a successful thinner especially with Humbrol paints.

On a recent visit to Deluxe Materials (the Roket glue people) I was shown their Fusion product which is very similar to Stabilit Express and claimed to have a longer shelf life.

..Adhesive for models where high impact plastics
need to be bonded to wood, metal, GRP etc.
Will even bond oily surfaces.
If it can't be glued with Super-Crylic,
it probably can't be glued!.

Somebody brought a glue subject up a little time ago.

They gave a link to a  X, Y,  ( if you know what I mean) chart anybody remember where it was ????
