Title: TID TUG
Post by: ggeorge on November 03, 2008, 12:41:50 am
HI Members,
It like I was successful the third time. Here are some pix of my TID build. Looking for any detail pix of TID. I have all the info I could locate on the internet. Pix of coaling scuttles and any other fittings that may help.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Here are a few more pix of TID. Here the super structure has been primered. The other pix is of the interiorwith motor and rudder servile. The motor is a power seat motor. Ideal for tugs as they are high torque and low rpm and I use a direct drive. The red mounting plate is a piece of 3/32 steal plate I am sure I will need the balance and it is ideal to drill and tap to mount hardware to.

Hi Mayhem Members,
I finally got back at the TID. Had a problem with the Bulwark web frames. They were too wide and the top rail was going to look way out of scale. With them all being installed this was not an easy job to cut them back. I managed to cut them back with a dremal saw blade. So here are a few more photos.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Just a update on my build. After the rubbing strake was glued in place it was then drilled and screwed with #4 brass flat head screws and then filled and sanded. The stern was drilled and doweled. This is going to be a working tug and I want it to be durable. Here are a few recent pix. The hull is now primed. The next task is the rudder and skeg.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Looks like I finally got through. Sorry for the repeats photos. The rudder and skeg will be made using brass. I increased the shaft diameter by turning a couple of bushings and sliding a larger shaft over the original one. The rudder is two flat brass pieces and round shaft on one edge with a larger tube with a notch cut the length and slid over the edge and soldered. The other edge has a square piece and soldered. Hope the photos help.

Hi All,
Just finished the rest of the skeg and rudder assembly. The skeg is a series of brass plates I fabricated and soldered to the prop shaft. The bottom support to the rudder can be removed to slide out the rudder. All the cavities were filled with resin. On to the next project on the TID.

Hi Again,
Here are a few more photos of my TID. I finished installing the top rail and now working on the stern. I made up a brass frame and cut some teak for the top planking which will be in sections that can be removed. I will post more photos as I progress.

Hi Again,
Started to work on the fittings for the deck. Here are a few photos of what is completed so far. With the holidays fast approaching the building will be slowing down until the new year. So I wish every one a happy and safe Christmas and all the best in the new year.

Hi All,
I managed to get a little work on the TID over the holidays. I spent most of the time on the windless. The drawings were not that good and the only photo I had was of the one on TID 164 which is painted black making it hard to pick out detail. A friend of mine and a mayhem member "OLDIRON" located a couple of great photos which were a great help. So here is what I came up with which seams to be fairly close to the photos.

Hi Again,
I could no locate information on TID steering quadarant so I used information I had on a similar tug of the same vintage. This is in an area with limited visibility so for now it will have to do. Any info in this area is much appreciated as it can be changed in the future. Here are a few photos of this area.

Hi Kno3,
The rudder servo can be seen on a page #1 photo. This servo will operate the rudder below deck which is connected to the rudder quadarant and will operate the chains which I intend to also turn the ships wheel. Thats the plan at this time.

Hi Mayhem Mates,
Just a little update on my TID build. I have finished most of the deck fittings and have moved to the superstructure. The stack is were I have started. At 3/4in. scale the diameter is about 2 1/2in. I was going to use a brass tube but due to weight I decided to make one. I realise that a tug this size the weight would not add much but I like to keep as much weight as possible below the water line. Here are a few photos of the stack build. It is standard plank (3/32 ply plank) on frame with a covering of fiberglass. When finished I will cut out the inside ribs. This will be a tilting stack so this is only the top section.

Hi Mayhem crew,
Still working on the stack. It took a bit longer than I thought it would but I think I finally got the stack to hinge similar to the one on the TID. Without any drawings I am working on photos of TID 164. Still a bit of work on the stack and I will post more photos when finished.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Back on line and back working on the TID. My wife purchase a new chesterfield and I ended up painting half the house to match the colour of the new furniture. I sure most of you have been there so I will spare you the details. I compleated the hull and the deck with all the fittings on the deck. Just waiting to get some warm weather so I can get outside and do the painting of the hull and deck and fittings. That is a 4in. prop which I hope will supply sufficient thrust for a tug this size. Here are a few updated photos.

Hi Mayhem Crew,

I have had a very frustrating week. I was making the cowl vents for the TID. The result below are probably about plan D. After a few falls starts I borrowed a vacuum former from one of the club members. COWL VENTS!....... from this scratch builder probably the part that I most dreaded building. Sounds like a topic for the chat section, what do you find is the most difficult part when building your models.

Hi again,

Here are a couple of other vents that gave me some grief. The cowl opening on the buff colored on is from my wife's measuring spoons which worked out perfect. The grey one is made out of three plastic plumbing pieces ground out to suit. As most scratch builders there is nothing safe in the house when we are looking for a solution to a building problem. Here are another shot of the TID. I hope I am not booring you.

Me again,

I always seem to have trouble locating figures for the scale 3/4-ft (1:16). By accident I was looking through a diecast catalogue for cars and noticed that 1:18 is a popular scale for cars. They also have diorama kits in that scale. So I ordered a set of figures and a set of torches. They came today and placing them on the tug without doing any alterations. They seem to work with the scale being that close. These figures are a hard plastic and can be easily altered which I will do at a later date. Here are a few photos of the products.

Hi All,
I took a brake from working on the hatches and decided to built the ships wheel. I managed to locate a couple of gears from my scrap bin that I think will work. Anything that is scrapped I always salvage the gears. This has payed off numerous times over the years. Here a a few photos of the ships wheel. I did not have any photos of the TID wheel but I did find a photo of a wheel of the same vintage and with the drawing from the plans this is what I came up with. The wheel can be changed in future if need be.

Hi Members,
I just finished the towing hook. I did not have any photos of the actual towing hook on the TID so I relied on the drawing and went from there. Here are a few photos of the tow hook build. And Barry I did not make a living at this. I am just another marine modeler who has learner from other builders and a forum like this is one of the best learning places. I have learned plenty from my own mistakes. I make my living as a District Fire Chief with the city of Toronto. With almost 36 years under my belt I will be retiring in the end of June.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Here is an update on the TID progress.  The hull and the deck is primed and waiting for paint. With some good weather I hope to have it painted in the next few days. Also working on getting the electrical to the point that I can get a water test. Here are a few photos of the electrical work in progress. I have mounted all components on a removable tray for ease of servicing. The two servos have a cam which will operate the switches for the smoke unit and the sound and the lights. The switches for the receiver and battery and the recharging of the batteries will be located under the large hatch cover in front of the stack. Looking forward to having the TID in the water for a water test.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
It is great to be back. I have been quite busy in the past couple of months with getting my sports car on the road for the summer.
A few problems with that but we will not go there. Also I had to get a new camera so I could not load any photos. I have a Cannon Power Shot SX10IS which is working out great. The TID has taken a back seat for the past couple of months. I started back on her last week and got the hull painted. I do not know how much you all like painting, but I rather be building. That little masking job on the deck took me about 5 hours to do about 15 minuets on airbrushing. So here are a few photos of the progress and will keep you informed of the progress.

Hi All,
Here are a couple of photos of the smoker in action. It puts out plenty of smoke but the smoke is to light in colour.
Hes any of the mayhem crew come across a recipe for  producing a more realistic smoke. The product I am using is
CREST smoke fluid that is used in the model locomotives. Also hope to have TID in the water next week at our club fun float
and BBQ. I will have more photos after the Madden voyage. All the electrical is installed to operate except for lighting and sound and
the superstructure still has to be finished.

I would like to thank everyone for there kind comments on the build and if there questions on the TID build
feel free to jump in.

Hi Mayhem Crew,
Our club, Kawartha Marine Modelers had our annual fun run and BBQ. With the help of Oldiron we placed her in the water. People
who build large boats especially tugs need all the the friends they can muster. I blasted TID out by guess at the sight. More good luck
than by design it was not far off. As you can see by the photos she needs a bit more weight in the bow.Enjoy the photos as they may not be much progress until the fall on the TID. Summer schedule full with other activities with car shows with Oldiron, family activity etc.
Looking forward to out trip to England at the end of Augest for three weeks. Going over with Oldiron (John).
I will place more photos as TID progresses, enjoy your Summer and lots of running. Also we hope to be at the Model Boat Convention at Warrington and if any members are going and would like to meet drink and a chit chat e-mail either Oldiron or myself.
On another note it is official I am RETIRED I have received my first pension cheque.

Hi Again,
To answer a couple of questions. As for the whistle, it is only for show, I am not that good! The smaller hex heads that I can not purchase I will make. I place a pin or small nail in a vice grip and file the flat and then do the angles. Then I snip off most of the shaft and with a drop of glue place in pre drilled hole. This is quick and simple and when painted will look the part. Hope the photo will help tp explain. Also here are a couple of the stack operating with the whistle and steam pipe.

Hi Derek,
I hope the photo will answer your question on the products I use. To sounder a joint I use the liquid flux and brush it on and then I will cut off a small piece of solder and place it on the joint. Now using a small butane torch I will heat the joint away from were I placed the solder and now the melted solder will flow towards the hotter area. If I have other solder joints close by that I am concerned of melting the solder I will soak a small piece of paper towel and place it on that joint. This may not be the best and easiest method of soldering brass but it works well for me. Enjoy your summer down under as we are having our typical Canadian winter.

Just as a mater of interest, looking at your superb brasswork, I got to wondering how heavy this model will be.
A truly beautiful job of work. BY.

I have not calculated the actual weight. Being a 52 in. tug ant anyone who likes to build tugs know it is a heavy tug.It took two of us to launch her last year. Apparently there is a formula to figure out the displacement and if anyone has it please let me know. As it is nearly compleated I will let you know the finished weight and how much bales I add in the future. Any guesses!

Hi all,
I have been fairly busy the past few months. I had some renovating around the house, a new bathroom and a laundry room. Also took my wife down to Florida to soak up some sun. Just got back last week and the weather is good enough to do some painting outside. I stripped down the TID superstructure and primed all the parts as you can see from the photos. What a pile of parts. Next I will do the final colour and put all the parts on for the final assembly. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

HI all, Thanks for the complements. It is nice to see this project comming to a close and the TID has been an enjoyable build. I hope to have it compleat for the Kitchener show in a couple of weeks and I will take some photos of the compleated TID and will post them. And Robert the ice has been out for quite a wile and the weather has been great and we are reserving a spot on the dock for you any time you are in the area. Thinking about the next project, Any suggestions?

Hi All,
Here are a few photos of the finished TID in the water. Martin you can take your pick and move them to the build tread. I have a new build which I plan to start in the fall and will start a new tread with the new build. Taking a brake now and enjoying some summer running.

Not quite sure what's happened here but a lot of the photos seem AWAL!

I'll re-upload them..... but as Eric Morecambe said:  'They are the right photographs  but not necessarily be in the right order!'  :-)
