As a follow up to the post 'Boating Lake Photo's' does anyone know of lakes which no loger exist, or have had a change of use?
Townsfield Park (sometimes called 'Pyramid Park') Bury, Lancs. Built on the site of the old railway station and goods sheds, this was a superb lake, which fell into disrepair, and became a no go area. When built the lake had a bronze statue (which the vandals used as target practice) and fountain. The lake was not deep, and we were allowed i/c craft, so if the engine stopped it was easy to wade for your boat.

Now (thankfully) the site is being redevloped, and the builders site cabins can be seen.

Wanstead Flats in East London had a huge pond used mainly by large vane steered yachts.
West Park -Goole- East Yorkshire. Now filled in to make a roller skate rink. The 18inch deep water was too dangerous. Kids can now use the River Ouse, approx five knots of liquid mud. Or the canal, If you fall in there's no way out as it has piled sides.
South Park -Goole-East Yorkshire. Gone. Think it was turned into a flower bed. (Portside II will know).
Burnt Mill Harlow Essex. Removed and the area turned into a marina, but with model boat use. Not the same though.

Weston Super Mare had one on the sand now gone

Most of the fresh water man made ponds here in South East Queensland have been either filled in or completely bulldozed because of the drought. It seems that the councils had to be seen to take the lead in saving water. So the public had to suffer >>:-( >>:-(. I mean they could have replaced the fresh water with recycled or sea water or something like that. I really envy some of you guys in the UK with accessable ponds that you don't have to hike for miles to use.

David, you should move down the road to sunny Ballina, ;) we have a lovely salt water tidal lake, with a surrounding park maintained by the local council. :-))

No usable water within 30 kilometres of me plenty of water but it's been turned into wetlands, and bird sanctuaries, 4ft hith water plants & rocks all round the edges. And no public transport to the only boat club lake the Surrey Park club in Boxhill.
And my test tank is empty with water restrictions i'm not allowed to fill it.

The Saxon Model Boat Club (Bury St Edmunds) had a fabulous lake that belonged to British Sugar. But there was a fatality at the factory
nearby, forklift truck and a pedestrian worker, no connection with the lake, but were thrown out never the less.

Maybe you should move to Tassie, we have 6 lakes
within 5 kilometres from our place, 4 of them 2 kilometres.
Plenty of water but no IC, thankfully..........

In Simmon's Park in Okehampton, Devon there was a boating pond. It had a concreted in sign in the middle saying, I think, "boating pond, No paddling". It was a very good place to stand in a thunderstorm as in 40+ years I never saw a drop of water in it. Now filled in of course so that people can only drown in th efast flowing river around the edge of the park.

Roy i'm envious 2km my mobility scooter with a small trailor for the boats would handle that round trip ok, serious lack of water in Melbourne.
Where in Tas are you & wife would like to know Rental availability & prices? I think she's serious {:-{

Harlow had a great model boating lake right next to a river----guess what, it all flats now, well you get more money that way :((

Roy, thanks for the suggestion, I love Tasmania, but I can't see David, who lives on the Gold Coast, or me, living in sunny Lennox Head, ever leaving our areas permanently. It's too cold down there in winter.

You are right there Peter. Although Tasmania is home to one of my heroes Peter Cundall. But I think the lifestyle here in Sunny Queensland would have to take some beating. I would however love to spend some time in Tassie and sightsee and absorb all that history and fantastic wilderness.

Sorry guys its not as cold as you think,
we left mid NSW for Tassie and were
told we would freeze, Winter temp for three
months in NSW between -8 and -10
In Tassie for three months in winter
-2 to -3 at a push,
Summer in NSW for three months 45+
In Tassie for summer 3 months 28 to 30

Roy, it depends where you are in each state. Where I live, the average winter temp is around 20C, and the average summer temp around 26C. To get temps of -8 to -10 you would have to be in the southern highlands (or occasionally, the New England tablelands), and for temps of 45+ you would be in outback areas, except for very rare occasions.
I do love Tassie though, we took our caravan there for 4 and a half weeks in 2003, and we would love to do it again.......one day. (If fuel prices ever come down {-) {-) )

We are situated in Deloraine in Tassie, it is virtually the centre of everything,
as in most places in Tassie not far from anywhere else :} :}
There are plenty of rentals down here from 160.00 to 200.00
depending on what you require, house prices are a lot cheaper than the Mainland............
