So, anyone have the particulars on the trawler used in the movie?

And did they really sink her? Those scenes look like no model!

Aha, just found an entry in Wikipedia, stating she was an ex Dutch hospital ship (??? hardly looks it!), the Timor Challenger ex De Hoop.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boat_That_Rocked#Production

But that hardware from Ross Revenge was used in the interior shots...

More:
And a Googling of "Timor Challenger" brings up LOTS for info and images... nice!
Not a hospital ship in the full sense, described more as a floating clinic and "mothership" for the Dutch fishing fleet.

Since placing the original post I have bought and watched the film after finding it on the bargain shelf at ASDA (Wal-Mart in the USA). Film is not that bad too with good music. If I was a film critic I would probably rate it 3 star (out of 5 star).

"Caroline" was moored off of Clacton, one Saturday , early evening, the DJ said that if anyone had nothing to do that evening, then drive to Clacton , Frinton and park on the Sea front, facing out to sea, As my wife were daft in those days, we drove nearly 70 miles to get there. On the way we noticed lots more cars heading in the same direction. We had , of course, Caroline on the car radio, and the DJ kept saying he could see cars arriving and to keep coming. we got there and finally found a place to park, It was a real party, everyone dancing and singing along. As it got to ten o'clock and nearly dark and his Show was coming to an end, the DJ, ( forgot his name, might have been Dave Cash) gave us a countdown and we all switched our headlights on. It was amazing, the whole coast lit up!! We stayed for a bit, then drove home. The Power of the Media, one casual comment and 100s of people responded. Was really good, Typical 60s , would never happen today, strangely there was no alchohol evident. Just good fun!1

By the way, I would realy realy like to build a model of The Ross Revenge.
does anyone know what model boat hulls are avaliable that will work for this?
was also thinking that a little speaker playing the intro to Radio Caroline and some songs from the time would be ace  %)

A model project of Ross Revenge by Barrie Freeman using a Models by Design hull was featured in Model Boats in the January 2009 issue. You can see the article online here:

One of our club members built the Ross Revenge using the Billings Nordcap .I think he extended the middle section of the hull to get the correct hull size. The model was fitted out with lots of electronics playing Caroline jingles. It was finally sold on E Bay  for a four figure sum the new owner of this model was in fact a electrician that worked on Ross Revenge.

A static model of the 'Ross Revenge' can also be modelled on the Revell Kit North Sea Fishing Trawler  'Arctic Corsair'.

For anyone who enjoys 60's and 70's music Radio Caroline broadcast a superb progamme covering this era every tuesday evening at 9pm/21:00 (UK). Full of all the songs of that era and the old jingles from when they broadcast from their ships. Radio Caroline is available on-line or on sky 0199, visit their website at  http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/#home.html
All legal now, and the dj's broadcast from a studio on dry land in Kent which must be a relief as broadcasting from the North sea (Caroline South) of the Irish sea (Caroline North) must have had it's moments!

As you sail out of Harwich Harbour on the way to Hook of Holland, there is an old Light Ship, bright red, with "Radio Sunshine" on her sides. Was she a floating Station that didn't succeed? Where was she stationed as a Lightship?

Frinton and park on the Sea front, facing out to sea, a countdown and we all switched our headlights on. It was amazing, the whole coast lit up!!
So your were one of the famous "Frinton Flashers"

If anyone is interested the film which is the topic of this thread, The Boat that Rocked, is on TV Saturday 4th Sept 2010 at 9.45pm (21:45) - Comedy - Sky 304/Virgin 404 or HD Sky 332/Virgin 434

The write up in the Radio Times says -- Unfocused and rather disappointing comedy that pays tribute to 1960's offshore pirate radio stations. Two star rating.

Interesting film showing 'Caroline' ex Danish ferry MV Fredricia sailing from the North Sea to her broadcasting location, Ramsey Bay, Isle of Man where she became Caroline North.
The much smaller Mi Amigo remained in the North Sea off Frinton, Essex to broadcast as Caroline South, following the merger between Radio Caroline and Radio Atlanta.

Although there is some duplication in this film, this is a good piece of history.

just been on to the radio caroline site and listened live for a while.I will be going back again!!!
I can remember when Radio Caroline sailed round the coast,to become Caroline North, broadcasting all the way.when she passed off St.Ives she put out for anyone listening to turn on their car headlights. It was quite bright along the cliffs that day.Music that will never be forgotten, nor the Caroline jingle!

As my earlier post - between 9pm and midnight on tuesdays is normally the 60's and 70's request show. (not sure about next week though). They play all the songs and jingles which anyone who listened in the 60's will remember.

Radio London have a section on radio ship models. Paul Ciesielski's Galaxy has a link to Offshore Radio Guide where which shows more model photographs.
