After buying some abs buoys on ebay and when they arrived they were two halves of a ABS moulding that had to be cut out and joined together I began to look for suitable substitutes, chrismass tree bourbles make great buoys, just fill in the shoulder with some p38 and sand down to a smooth finish, spray them and hey presto you have a buoy.
Wilkinsons sell a pack of 30mm bourbles for £2.00 or Asda sell 27 25mm bourbles for £1,27, I ave used the buoys for the last year on my Arun lifeboat in the picture , the crewman is holding a 30mm Xmas bourble.
Mrs lifeboat cant believe how interested I am in looking round shops at Xmas decs!

Although my tactic will be stealing them slyly off the xmas tree!

Still working these out, but at this point, I have cast a hard topper out of
a polyurethane plastic. The piece on the right had no reinforcement, the
ball has a brass screw eye in the casting. I think thats the way to go.
The body of the orange fender area is a soft polyurethane rubber.
Squishy to the touch, and I have cast a bit of foam into the center to
make them a bit more bouant. So I am close to a set up that I think will
work consistently. :-)

Getting really interested in Xmas decs now, found some 20mm baubles in B&Q in white , just right for 1/25 - 1/32 models, they are £2.99 for a pack of sixteen.
