Hi All,
Can someone tell me if there is any kits available in the uk for Footy yachts or can they only be scratch built?
thanks
adie

yes - see http://footy.rcsailing.net/links.php
I would not like to bury you in detail, but there is good discussion here
http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/forumdisplay.php?f=61
Have a look and see if any of them float your boat - many people start with a boat built from a plan, as I did. This may be a good idea since UK (are you in the UK?) weather seems to strongly favour a MacRig rather than the sails that are supplied with kits
regards, and happy to help

I have thought about scratch building one but i dont have a printer at home to print the plans i have seen on that website you linked and the printers at work only take standard A4 paper.
i do prefer scratch building as the rewards of knowing i did it all are much better
thanks

Sorry - my first reply got lost in Mayspace
NO PROBLEMO, Squire, I'm happy to print patterns full size and post to you, if that helps - local copy shops will enlarge for you , too
Good idea - many people, me included started with plans - there are a list of them
http://footy.rcsailing.net/plans.php
I started with Razor, and had the pleasure of racing against Bill (the designer) last year - if I were doing it again i would now go for Cobra - his latest design.
Model boats published Wonderfooty - by the late, great Ricky Webb. I have this copy, and you can borrow. Note - its a little too wide (6mm) for the "BOX" but this can easily be corrected. His website also offers plans for his Styrene footy and a 12inch thames barge.
George Turner has discontinued his sweet little Freya, but the last batch of hulls exist and can be liberated for modest sums

happy to help

If you can get hold of a back issue of the Model Boats Magazine, sorry I can't tell you which one at the moment but I know someone will, then you get the plan free as well as an article telling you exactly how to make it.
Very simple chine construction so don't worry about it not being a kit.

thanks for the replies i will investigate the model boat back issue and see if i can get a my hands on 1.
thanks

Being totally naive about these things, what defines a "Footy Yacht" ?
-
I think the Hull should be no longer than 12".
Ricky Webb does a Kit.
Does anyone know how he is as he has been unwell ?
Len.

If you refer to the reply above by Andrew I'm afraid unfortunately Ricky is no longer with us.

Richard Webb has passed away.

Found some rules
http://footy.rcsailing.net/rules.php
The hull could be a tad over a foot.
Taken from the link above.
PRIMARY MEASUREMENT RULE
B.1 With the exceptions listed below in B.2, B.3 and B.4, the boat in racing trim shall be capable of fitting into an open-topped rectangular measurement box of internal dimensions 305mm long, 305mm deep, 153mm wide, with 6.3mm wide slots for projecting spars and rudder, as shown in the diagram.
B.2 The following may project above the top of the measurement box: sail(s), mast, spars, rigging, aerial, associated fittings.
B.3 A bowsprit may project forward of the measurement box.
B.4 The following may project aft of the measurement box: bumpkin, rudder.

Declaration of interest: I'm a Footy
freak enthusiast
As you have found they are approx one foot long. basically the hull/keel have to fit in a "box" 1foot x 6 inches x 1foot high - but can be diagonal . Spars and sails and to a certain extent the rudder can poke out of the box
This is quite a good starting point for rules, meetings plans and kits

Footys are sailed all round the world, and there are 208 registered in Britain (four of them mine). I started in November 2007 and am still learning every day. We sail for fun and comradeship as much as WINNING - there are regular meetings all round the UK, and monthly low-key sessions at Burton on Trent

Boats are small, courses are close and short. Fun is high
If anyone turns up at a meeting there are always boats to be loaned and visitors may find themselves racing
This is my Razor with a borrowed sail (thanks, trevor)

The two hull sides are different colours so I can tell which way its going!
Help always available

are footys a good way to start sailing?
Maybe one of these would be excellent for me ---- pack it into a rucksack and cycle down to the local pond. I dont drive you see :embarrassed:
-
Garabaldy,
Now I will admit to predjudice, but yes, they are a good start in model Yachting. There is a lot of help, the natives are friendly, and as you say they pack up small. All my keels are removable, so the whole enchilada would fit in a wine-bottle box
Honesty compels me to say that they are sensitive because they are small. I really wish there was a perfect Shake-the-box-and-sail-it footy, but there really doesn't seem to be. To begin with; any hull - even one carved out of solid foam will suffice to learn with - the keys to success are balancing the sails and hull so that they work together
It is almost certain, as well that there are secret footy nuts enthusiasts very near you wherever you live.
There is a growing sub-class of "scale" or "charm" footys where racing performance is less important than a nice grin :} as they sail
if I can help, I will

as i have been waiting for 3 long weeks for another plan to arrive to start a new build this is tempting. I would probably use styrene sheet. I like the bob about design. Fun and easy.
