Beautifully done, Colin.

We won't be at home for Christmas Day this year, so our tree will stay in its box.

I'm sure most people living in the northern hemisphere would find Christmas in Australia rather strange; no snow, temperatures in the 30s Celsius, the sun shining brightly, and crystal waves breaking on golden sands  8) (How's that for lyrical prose?)  O0 Of course, the bit about the waves and the sand only applies if you live, as I do, near the coast  {-) {-)

Anyway, a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all on the forum  :-))

Peter in Australia (where it's actually raining at the moment)  <:(

OHHH. Peter........you rotter. ;D ;D
 brings back happy memories of my years of teaching in Aus, and spending my two Christmas's on Bondi and Batemans Bay, eating Turkey cooked over an open wood fueled barby.
Tasted crap, but the cold tinnies made it all seem an adventure., %% {-) %%
how I long for some decent sun and hot weather. {:-{ :((
Take care and have a merry christmas over there.

Thanks, Neil. I will spare you a thought as I put on some more sunscreen  8) {-)

It is actually a glorious morning right now (7.22 am Sunday local time), thankfully, as it's our model boat club's Christmas sail day and family picnic today.

All the best,

Peter.

Here's the wife efforts so far! As she has collected Christmas ornaments for the 35 years we have been married mostly the smaller miniature ones.  And the last few years she hasn't displayed them. She is going all out and full bore this year.

Having about 14 plastic storage containers of Christmas Items ( larger sized tubs) I told her she would have to stop adding to her collection as I'm getting to old to be hauling them down from the attic. 2 1/2 story house. And shes slowing down putting them up. Will have to start, in August  {-) {-) {-) Will continue when it done ok2

Last time i had a christmas tree the cats ripped it apart in half the time it took me to put it up, So We gave up on that idea. Also with a price of around £20 per meter...

Our last christmas tree is now five years old, four meters high and is enjoying life in our frount garden. Just waiting for the day we come home from work to find some git has chopped it down and done a runner with it.

Dont get me wronge I do like a good tree in the hallway at crimbo time, and the ones show look good.

@peter fitness. So what do you have for dinner, the full roast or the big BBQ?
My mother visited my brother one year many years back and did the full English Dinner, turkey, spuds the lot. The first time he had a Christmas dinner in twenty years. Made him cry, bless him! {-)

peter fitness. So what do you have for dinner, the full roast or the big BBQ?

Ian, we normally have a mostly cold Christmas dinner, all the cooking is done in the preceding days. We have ham, cold pork, cold chicken and turkey, various kinds of salads, prawns and perhaps, a hot potato bake, together with appropriate liquid refreshments  ok2 . Years ago we did have the traditional hot Christmas dinner, but in these enlightened days, most people do as we do; when the temperature is 30+ Celsius, the kitchen is not a good place to be, with the oven going full bore  O0. The barbecues come in the days after Christmas, together with a cold beer, or 2, or 3, or more  :-))
Bring it on  :}

Happy Christmas,

Peter.

Title: Christmas thoughts
Post by: Bunkerbarge on December 22, 2008, 12:55:00 pm
Around this time of year I always dig out my favourite poem and read it a few times.  It always makes me reflect, especially when, as this year, I am away from home.  So I thought this year I would share it with every one on here as well.  Enjoy it and spare a moment to think of those away from home, especially in the industries connected with the sea, who will not be with thier families when we all particularly want to be.

Christmas at Sea

by Robert Louis Stevenson
(1850-1894)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sheets were frozen hard, and they cut the naked hand;
The decks were like a slide, where a seaman scarce could stand;
The wind was a nor'-wester, blowing squally off the sea;
And cliffs and spouting breakers were the only things a-lee.

They heard the suff a-roaring before the break of day;
But 'twas only with the peep of light we saw how ill we lay.
We tumbled every hand on deck instanter, with a shout,
And we gave her the maintops'l, and stood by to go about.

All day we tacked and tacked between the South Head and the North;
All day we hauled the frozen sheets, and got no further forth;
All day as cold as charity, in bitter pain and dread,
For very life and nature we tacked from head to head.

We gave the South a wider berth, for there the tide-race roared;
But every tack we made we brought the North Head close aboard.
So's we saw the cliff and houses and the breakers running high,
And the coastguard in his garden, with his glass against his eye.

The frost was on the village roofs as white as ocean foam;
The good red fires were burning bright in every longshore home;
The windows sparkled clear, and the chimneys volleyed out;
And I vow we sniffed the victuals as the vessel went about.

The bells upon the church were rung with a mighty jovial cheer;
For it's just that I should tell you how (of all days in the year)
This day of our adversity was blessèd Christmas morn,
And the house above the coastguard's was the house where I was born.

O well I saw the pleasant room, the pleasant faces there,
My mother's silver spectacles, my father's silver hair;
And well I saw the firelight, like a flight of homely elves,
Go dancing round the china plates that stand upon the shelves.

And well I knew the talk they had, the talk that was of me,
Of the shadow on the household and the son that went to sea;
And O the wicked fool I seemed, in every kind of way,
To be here and hauling frozen ropes on blessèd Christmas Day.

They lit the high sea-light, and the dark began to fall.
"All hands to loose topgallant sails," I heard the captain call.
"By the Lord, she'll never stand it," our first mate, Jackson, cried.
. . . ."It's the one way or the other, Mr. Jackson," he replied.

She staggered to her bearings, but the sails were new and good,
And the ship smelt up to windward just as though she understood;
As the winter's day was ending, in the entry of the night,
We cleared the weary headland, and passed below the light.

And they heaved a mighty breath, every soul on board but me,
As they saw her nose again pointing handsome out to sea;
But all that I could think of, in the darkness and the cold,
Was just that I was leaving home and my folks were growing old.

Merry Christmas every one.
