Title: broadbeam leander class frigates
Post by: Capt Podge on December 13, 2008, 08:55:55 pm
Hi All,
I'm new to the Forum so please bear with me till I get my bearings.
As a "kit-basher" of 8 models completed, I have decided to "alter course" and have a go at scratch-building.
I am thinking of building a Leander class frigate, in particular a broadbeam, probably HMS Ariadne, as she retained her twin 4.5" turret throughout her service life.
I have seen some models of warships built to a scale of 1/72 and liked the look of them so I would probably go for that scale. I remember seeing "task force 72" in one of the model magazines and was well impressed ! (I think they are based somewhere in Australia)
Can anyone suggest a starting point ref plans, materials, research etc.. ?

I must emphasise that this is currently just an idea....am I being too ambitious ?

No, the Leander is quite a simple superstructure and hull.
I would say go for it if it is the ship that interests you.
I am slowly refurbing a 1/64 scale Leander so do know a bit about what I am saying.
As long as you get good drawings it should be ok.

That was quick, thanks Bob, drawings will be a good starting point. I'll see if I can get the ball rolling early in the New Year.

I am also pretty sure that Allan Pew in Australia makes a 1/72 scale hull and some fittings too.
Sirmar make a 1/96 scale hull and fittings.
AP Models don't have a website, but if you are interested I am sure some of our members from Oz can inform you of this.
