Title: Clyde Puffer - Model Slipway
Post by: phil on December 14, 2008, 09:40:27 pm
Hi Folks,

Just a few shots of my latest model, a Model Slipway Clyde Puffer. There are a few finishing touches that need to be done, but it's almost there! Thanks to Model Slipway for their excellent service and Dave at Action Electronics for his advice on what gear to put in it.

Yeah it's a brilliant little model, great fun to build. Very easy to transport too!

Look great on the water. Fine job. The rigging looks particularly good, and the lighted wheelhouse is a nice touch. Happy sailing.

Cheers,

Hi,
I like this boat very much. Ever since I noticed it on the http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.mcmanus/the_puffer.htm (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.mcmanus/the_puffer.htm) i did not stop trying to find the plans for this model, or any similar, but accidently i stumbled upon this forum and found that you (also) built this boat. I like it very much, and am wondering, would you be willing to share your plans for this model?

The model in the pictures is built from the kit made by Model Slipway.

The model shown on the website you have pointed up is a bit bigger, and you can download the plans (MV Vital Spark) from the same website:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.mcmanus/plans.htm

A full set of electronic effects is available from ACTion. It will suit either model:

Hello, first post from me, I recently bought a cheap CD with a load of boat plans on, and included in that was a set of files for the 'Vital Spark' which I'd quite like a go at building - I've got access to a laser cutter through a local makerspace, but when it came to looking at the files, it turns out that the file called lines.dxf which has all the side profiles is from the wrong vessel.

The same drawings appear as a free download from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.mcmanus/plans.htm but the same fault exists - wrong type of vessel! the original CAD files appear to have been drawn by Geoff Axford, does anyone have the correct file, or could point me in the direction of Geoff?

Thanks,

Jon

I think those were drawn up from a set of plans in Model Boats magazine from many a day ago!

Do you know how to import / convert from jpeg's?

I think I actually have that plan (in with the thousands of model railway magazines) but I was hoping to start in CAD to the same scale as the other plans that are right for a puffer. My experience of tracing pictures in CAD (manually or automatically) hasn't been very successful.

Thanks,

Jon

Coreldraw will import and also save files as DXF format. I've managed to pick up its basics in the past few days, so if I can do it anyone can. Iv'e not worked on aDXF file within Coreldraw, but it stands to reason that if it can import the file then you should be able to alter it to your needs.

My first attempt, laser cut in 2mm acrylic at Richmondmakerlabs.uk in 4mm/ft scale for model railway compatibility. needs a bit more work as I made a couple of booboos and forgot to cut the first frame. Not sure quite what I will do with it from here.
