I wonder why so few members put their location in their profile ? Often when a posting refers to a sailing venue or a show "which was x number of miles away" I am curious as to where this poster lives and probably sails - but there often is no location in their profile. Why are people so reluctant to enter such details ?

North Wales, thats a big area, ;D ;D
Ah yes - but my profile actually says " Lleyn Peninsular, Nth Wales" and thats a small but very beautiful area :D - its a 30 mile drive to where I sail at Llanberis - but its worth it to sail with a super bunch of people.
Don B
-
Hello all, Don only 30 miles! I live in Aberdeen and have just finished loading up the car to go for a sail tomorrow with the other club members in Edinburgh which is only 117miles away ;D Mad, I know but good fun and a great bunch of folk to sail with ;D ;D It also gets me away from the mundane and I enjoy the wee trip to real civilisation a good few times a year. Also have been known to travel to Ayr, Largs, MacDuff and elsewhere in Scotland for a day trip. Sadly not made it to any of the English shows yet but there is always hope.
cheers

And mine is on my profile!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

im in Southampton but sail as far away as Basingstoke.
my local lake is a dream, i dont condone chasing ducks with a boat but it happens lol ;D ::)
-
Good question... have always wondered the same thing too! I've got North East England on my profile and its not as if I'm giving my address away is it?? At least it gives other members a rough regional location which is surely a minimum I would have have thought! It isn't just the UK either (as I guess a lot of us tend to think parochially(!) but some of the newer members may well be from anywhere around the world.... I just think it would be handy and interesting to know from where an opinion is being generated from! ;)

This was a question I posed on the MB forum, makes it so much easier if you have a doo-dah to give away,
or to collect,
no point in even considering an offered bit or a boat if the other sailor lives in 'Hamburg [Hi Jan] Tug
currently moving from East Merseyside to South West Lancashire; Then .... But that would be telling wouldn't it?

Having a location would help especially when someone is looking for help or searching for materials and info in their location.

So tell us do the Aussies also send their convicts to an island then?
It reminds me of the joke about the Pommie at standing at the immigration desk at Sydney Airport...
The immigration officer asks the Pom if he has a criminal record.
The Pom replies "I didn't realise that I still needed one!" ;D ;D
(Am I repeating myself)?

Where am I? Lately, I've been asking that of myself a lot.
I do know I pay taxes on a lot in McAlester, oklahoma, USA. Easy to find, 90 miles from Tulsa, 90 miles from the Texas/Okla border, 90 miles from Fort Smith. About eight blocks from City Hall. Look for the junk in the yard. Old 'ringer washing machine' for mixing epoxy, large section of vinyl siding off of house from needing sheets of plastic, two large 'Akita's next door (my buddies!), old pickup truck needing work in the drive way. Typical 'redneck' well appointed residence. If I'm not at work I'm usually sitting on the front porch (building area). You'll know me by the 'FBI' cap (Female Body Inspector, so I'm told, still waiting, hasn't worked yet). Visits by appointment only! Tour tickets are sold down at "Rosie's" bar, ask for a window seat. 'Rosie's also sponsors Wednesday NIght wet 'T'-shirt contests (male and female), and semi-profesional nude pool games on Saturday nights (I got extra tickets!).

Another forum I moderate for has your location in the left hand pane of a post along with your avatar.
Maybe that could be added here?

I'm down in Poole, Dorset, UK. Used to have a wonderful boating lake...until the Council drained it and it won't be filled again until late Summer apparently! I guess I'll have to try and find Setley Pond, I think that's my closest water (apart from the sea!)

Take Lymington Road out of Lyndhurst.

Why are so many members reluctant to put the location where they live on their profiles?
Bob
-
Its that way on all of the forums, Just the country or state or area would be nice. As it make me smile when somebody on another forum requests a source of supply for something and doesn't give a clue as to where they are or if they are even on this planet! Then they don't put the location in when asked but do go into a rant when after a number of days nobody answers or no answers other than smart a$$ ones.
That is my second most favorite complaint about forums. The first is the people that don't read the thread and will list the same site or answer multiple times. Followed by my third which is the people that ask questions, but don't respond when somebody answers them. At least with " I read it!"
Which doesn't seem to happen on this forum as much.
I have been told they don't want somebody tracking them down and stealing everything they own :police:
:-)

Great Lakes/Michigan?.... that far too far to go in one lunchtime, you're safe from me PT!!
( But what times are you usually away from the house... just in case? ) :-)

On another forum I belong to there is location information below the avatar saying, 'I am located in .....' . The location is the city/state entered into the registration page.
Could we do something similar?
It does give a better sense of who you are chatting to. And it is possible to fing others near you and exchange PMs.

I only ask as I have my location and a few members in my location have brought their models round for some advice and assistance.
If you don't live far my usual answer is "bring it round" but I cant if no location added.
No not to rob you all blind, I have enough here now!!!
Bob
-
Agree with you on this one Bob, if I'd still been living in Southsea (I'm ex-RN) you'd have a regular visitor coz my building skills are rather rough around the edges.
I'm relatively new to this hobby, only been at it about 12 years !
-
I think it would be good to see a “location” as many people want to sell/swap there boats they no longer want or to have a bit of cash for something else. You need to know a location if you are interested, as it could be local or in another country. Big boats can cost a lot for P&P and can be damaged on route, so pick up may only be possible, what is the point in replying to an ad, if you know that its to far to travel.
You don't have to put your number or street name, just a local town to you would do, and if you are in the UK, Europe, US. Could that do any real harm?? Sorry that's my ten pence worth. Sonic.
-
I have put my location down as SW Surrey, UK which is sufficient to give people an idea where to aim... ;)
Colin

In my profile I give my Department name and number which also is the first two digits of a post code in France. A French Department is a bit like a UK county.
If anyone wants to add a location to their Profile it is very easy to make an amendment.

-
A good idea and a quick response by Martin - well done lads !
-
It is also a good idea to put the country you live in as well as town or county.
As has been pointed out, there is a Bethesda in North Wales, one in Maryland USA, a couple of others in Wales as well, and there are probably several others around the world. The same is true for London, York, New Castle and many others.

We try to avoid having Yorkshiremen in Dorset, apart from wealthy ones like Geoff Boycot who I believe, has a house in Sandbanks . Must live close to Harry Rednapp
-
Ken, I can't think of a single good reason why I would want to give up decent beer (with a head!), melt in the mouth pork pies, some of the best scenery in the country the best fish and chips in the world.
Apart from which any Yorkshireman who chooses to live elsewhere can't be a real one in the first place, so Boycott doesn't count!!!

All Members are encouraged to list their approximate location in their Profile.
This should not be too specific to protect your privacy. However, a location helps Mayhem gain an understanding of how widely the site is used and allows other Members to help with recommendations which relate to where you live and sail.
It is easy to add a location, just click on "Profile" at the head of the page. If you need help let me or any of the Moderators know and we will be glad to help.

HOW RIGHT YOU ARE

I agree, and have ammended my profile accordingly.

As Above,
It can be so confusing if asking a question when you don't even know which continent (or planet in some cases) you are residing in.
Bob
-
Would it help if it was a mandatory box to fill in when you join the Forum at least that would
catch the new members.
Geoff
-
There is a box for location, as all members who have filled out their profile will know. :-))
Some do not bother to show what their location is, for whatever reason! {:-{ {:-{ {:-{
Even if it was made mandatory, what checks could be made to verify that the location is accurate!! :police: :police:
It seems a fact that we will just have to endure and may be better to just ignore posts from those who are shy about where they are!! -- assuming they know? O0 O0
-
As you would probably know, Bob, there have been many attempts made to encourage members to include their location with their profile but, apart from a few, most do not do so. Frankly, I don't care who knows where I live, my location is easily found as I use my own name on the forum. So far I have not had anyone land at my front door trying to sell me something I don't want, as a result of showing my location here.
Peter.

I think its more the fact they others don;t want to share some information on line such as age, real names, or locations to do with identity theft, and such. for some of the 'older' guys who don't realise that identity theft is a real issue at present and revealing real information about yourself puts you at a higher risk then those who don't.
I personally reveal some information but only infomation that i know can't be used in any way to cause issues later down the line, just remember how many people can over the world can view your personal infomation from your profile just by a few clicks of a button. its kinda freaky!
That said some of the information on here can't be used for much its to vague but ask yourself this, do you want to risk your identity stolen, do you want to get stuck with £1000's worth of debt you didn't cause, facing heavy fine's bad credit rating, or even jail time because of others actions with your personal information?
-

Maybe just a region would be good for example in the UK it could be cambs, north yorks, etc for US and Australians they could use states
I dont use my real name of the forum as my surname is very uncommon, (Im the only one with my surname in Finland)
-
Bob,s original question was about location, I think that,s a reasonable enough request, what would be the point of responding to somebody looking for a certain boat fitting, by saying we have it in our local model shop, (if there is such a thing anymore,),,,only to find they live in Tasmania or somewhere, ( no offence to any Tasmanian member,s )

Just a tad OTT regarding this thread <:( <:(
Nothing in the profile section of this forum reveals anything that is not already in the public domain.
A location is no more than what it says. It's not your address and postcode - is it??
Most of us older ones are pretty clear about the perils of identify theft and the ways of protecting against it, I think!
Some identities are just not worth stealing O0

On this and other Forums, I use my own Name and my location is there for all to see...

Quite right, by including my real name and town in my profile, I'm revealing less on Mayhem than could be found by looking in the local phone book.
Peter.

Peter.
On the contrary, you are allowing someone to connect a large stream of information which can be harvested from Mayhem with other streams of information about you which they can find from other sources. This may not be an issue for you at all, but it may be an issue for others who may occasionally be involved in, shall we say, more dodgy undertakings.... %) %)
But a name is not an issue here - a location is. A major reason for my attending Mayhem rather than some other board is the lack of tight regulation - some require a precise address to be offered. While I could simply lie, I would prefer not to be associated with a group which feels that this is an acceptable requirement.
In my experience people are very happy to comply with sensible requests if the reasons are explained at the time. In this case a problem only arises if someone asks for help, directions or some other geographically-related request. It is simple to point out at registration time that including a general geographical area enables these requests to be fulfilled (do you do this already?) and that if someone does not want to put this information in their profile they should remember to include a general location in the message text whenever they make such a request....
-
The reason for this request is very simple.
At this moment out of the latest 3 sales adverts there is only 1 location.
As you are aware Mayhen is an international forum so in theory the boats for sale could be anywhere in the world.
This is also true for posts about help.
Nothing sinister, nothing conspiratorial just helping mayhem do what we do best, help each other.
Simples!!!
Bob
-
Yes, we do explain to new Members when they join why we recommend a general location, such as "London" or in my case "Dept. 85, La Vendee".
I personally send a welcome message to each new Member when they register which includes that advice, a potted version of the Mayhem Rules, an expression of the Mayhem ethos and some advice about starting out on this Forum.
We do not send an automated message preferring to personalise it when possible. For example, for new Members from the antipodes or the orient who give a location I point out we have Moderators who live there. A location also allows us to tell new |Members about clubs nearbye in case they are interested.
I have had some slight problems sending the messages recently which have now been resolved. If any new Member could not read their message they may like to contact me.

You may well be correct here, but what's the answer? I, like others on this forum, sort of instinctively respond to requests for help. Some responses generate replies, others don't. For myself, I tend to treat people as trustworthy until shown to be otherwise...too late by then I suppose. But I'm not going to go through the rest of my life distrusting everyone "just in case". What an awful thought!. BY.

You're right Bryan, that would make for a sad life.

DG, given your user name, does this include you???? :o {-)
Seriously, though, I'm curious as to what the "large stream of information" which could be "harvested from Mayhem" might consist of?
I agree completely with Bryan Young, if I was to go through life distrusting everyone and every thing, I'd be an even more miserable old git then I am now :D

I must agree with Peter.
Shipmate60 (Bob) in Southampton, it doesnt seem to give much away.

Maybe some would use all the info as a ready made data base for selling products such as zimmer frames and medical products used by the over 60s oh and and saga insurance.

:-)Hi guys , as a new member i have put my location in , and have no probs with that , :-))cya all on the forums ....
-
Hi Guys, I think the amount of information that anyone could collect here is just as easily found on Google. I get 800 # calls all the time, sometimes 4/5 a day, one press of the on/off button fixes that. I am with you guys I am not going to end my days being suspicious of everything. Remember when I asked what members did in real life, I think I got nearly 100 honest replies.( at least I think they were all honest). Mick B.

Hi Folks
I took part in Mick B's what do you do thread - was honest, not worried. Mayhem never shows any financial info
but one thing I would say that does surprise me is when people post up their holiday arrangements on an open board.
Re a very general location - why not just make it a mandatory field?
Dave
Just popping out to Halfords for an hour or two, spare house key is by back door under pot, alarm code 1234, dog doesn't bite :-))

".... dog doesn't bite"
Yes it @#$%@# does!!! Ouch! >>:-(

It really is funny when you take the time to look at where people live, mine says Canada, only the second largest country in the world. I live in the city of Calgary just 60 miles east of the Rocky Mountains. The city is over 550 Sq. miles in area, 1.3 million people live here besides me/partner & our two dogs We are(city & me too) 3500ft. above sea level. The province we live in is called Alberta & is much larger than England, Scotland & Wales combined. Our southern border is the USA(state of Montana) west is British Columbia & the Pacific ocean(Vancouver), a journey of 1000km & about ten hours of driving. We have 55 mountain peaks in the province that exceed 11,000ft. The province stretches 700mls north from the US border. Anywhere we go we can usually cover a distance of 60/65 miles in an hour. We generally talk of how far some place is in time rather than miles/ km's. One hour's drive is 65 miles. Back to the city, it is divided into 4 quadrants, I live in the north west & can be out of the city going west in about ten minutes. I hope this gives you a better idea or picture of where I live. If anyone on here would like more in-fro about here just PM me. It is one of the best holiday destinations in North America, the best months are June to September. The scenery is out of this world. We also have the highest pass in Canada at 7250ft above sea level. Everything is large scale here. Mick B. = So folks that is where I live how about you ?.

Well I hope my 'name' gives the location away !, srely couldnt get much clearer %)

I want to cover a few points here, first we are going to Maui, south west Keihi I think, (the boss knows where.) Neil I was wondering how you were soo familiar with OZ girls, just asking. Arty I would love to visit Australia & I have a standing invitation from a company I do business with in Sydney to stay with the owner if I go.( Midel PTY)They make parts for SU carburettors. It is on my short list right after I go to the U/K & clean up Neil's workshop. Dave I am like you I don't like spiders or snakes of any kind. At this point I would like to wish all you guys a Very Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year, Martin & the moderators too, & thanks for the fun. Mick B. PS. = back on the 12th January.

Hi guys just a follow up to my post, Bob I answered your question, and we were there last year too. Peter you sure get around is there any place left you have not visited ?.Arty the other thing that interests me is the sheer variety of wild life & how different it is to North America. Neil it is a very beautiful place to live but like most places it has it's negatives too, like a winter's morning when it is 35 degrees below zero & the wind is howling, believe me you would wish to be elsewhere. Mick B.
