Can some one help me find a decent free antivirus package? Ive tried getting the free version of AVG but the past couple i have downloaded were corrupt files :((

Try Ad Aware 2008 NO 4 on the list at http://www.download.com/windows/ as well as barriew link.
Hopefully your not just using free antivirus to protect you computer.

I actually managed to get it back. It seems i was downloading the file from a 3rd party site instead of directly from avg.

Recently my AVG in the laptop decided it would not recognise that it had updated itself, so I installed Comodo, also a well spoken of freebie. It does firewall and anti virus, and the corresponding Comodo BOClean does anti malware. They set up easily, did a rather long but hopefully thorough scan, queried a great deal of activity, and have settled down nicely,

thats what my avg started doing. So i decided to reinstall it but of course i forgot to back up the set up files when i uninstalled it. Thats what sparked this thread. Since reinstalling it everything seems to be ok again. I use zonealarm too which provides me with a firewall along with some other things i cant remember!

One of the best free anti virus software is Avast. Its consistently at or very near the top of industry rated comparisons. I would not recommend AVG to anyone. Its pants and nearly always comes bottom in the same industry rated comparisons. People think it does a good job but it doesnt. Be warned!

Really? I was allways told on good authority that avg was one of the best. Im at work at the moment but when i get home i will look into avast. Are these industry comparisons shown anywhere on the web?

AVG comes out worst with a score of just 30 compared to 94 and 89 for others out of a possible 125.
AVG simply is not good enough and is often 'highly rated' by word of mouth.

We've gone from Norton 360 (absolutely horrendous) through AVG (even worse), and have now settled on Kaspersky - what a pleasure... Not free admittedly, but only a fifth of the price of the others. I bought a five licence pack on the web to do all of our PC's and laptops for around the same cost as one Norton 360 licence. It gets very good reviews too.

I just run with F-Secure 2008 (update in Fed to 2009) and also had Ad-Aware 2008. but dropped it as I felt that it wasn't needed.

I have had some small problems with AVG but have to agree that it is one of the best packages out there.

I use Steganos, same as Kaperskey but cheaper. Seems to do the job OK and doesn't get in the way.

can anyone seee any problems with having avast and avg installed at the same time?

It's not a good idea to have two anti virus programs operating simultaneously as they can trip over each other. Having said that, I find that my Steganos seems to co exist peaceably with Windows Defender.

As long as they don't conflict with each other..usually one does the job.

I have the avg freebie, every time I log on to the net I get "tracking cookie" warnings,AVG cannot get rid of them, even if I clear the tracking cookie log they are still there, hidden somewhere. Going to try one of the above recommendations, many thanks

Cookies are I.D.Tags to help recognise your computer when you revisit their sites. I don't think there too harmful but from time to time I delete my temporary internet files, cookies, history. saying that no doubt there is some amongst that have had trouble with them.

So, reading all(?) that seems to be written about FREE antivirus software - it would appear that AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is probably about the best available. I must admit that this is a new name to me. It all comes down to personal choice and confidence in the product that you choose to use. Having no virus problems is good news to any user.

There is a free year of Kespersky if you do on line banking with Barclays. Might give it a go. :-))
