This subject appeared recently on another site, but I cannot find it again. Sorry. The enclosed pic is of No.2 painter with some of his handiwork on board (I think) "Benhiant" taken when I was a cadet in her about 1960(ish). Even with a "full" UK crew there were always 2 Chinese "painters" embarked to do the grained bulkheads. And very well done it was. As you can see the panelling with the 4 thistles was superb. Just a pity that my box-brownie couldn't pick up the actual graining effect. It really was good. And it was also varnished and polished! Wish they could do it today. (sigh).
The pic also shows how scuttles or portholes or whatever you want to call them are fitted...and the size of the securing bolt heads.

This current example of "graining" on PS Waverley may be of interest. It's very well done and makes a good comparison with the the actual wood door.
