Title: Some memories
Post by: Garabaldy on January 14, 2009, 08:56:17 pm
The first time i was ever on a ship of any kind was the St Ola sailing from Scrabster to Stromness about 20 years ago.  The pentland firth was anything but calm and i spent the whole crossing being sick.  My mum gave me fresh orange which made me even more sick.  Ive never been able to drink the stuff since.

About 5 years later i was on a boat from the isle of harris to St Kilda (that place is worth a visit!) The journey lasted about 5 hours and i was so sea sick the whole time i couldnt move!  When we anchored in the bay on arrival i was sick all over the boat.  Oops!  St kilda was also the first place i saw phosphorescense in the sea.  The smallest disturbance to the water and it would glow bright green!  St Kilda is where the UKs most remote pub is but its now closed to civillians.

These are some of my earliest memories of ships / boats.  Maybe i just came up with another reason why i sail model boats instead of real ones? Ha ha

St Kilda has been vacated by the Army so there is only the bare maintenance staff left now.
Did you visit the "Black House Museum" while you were there, or the "Puff Inn" the Senior Rates Mess and Bar?

Is the "PuffInn" still open?  It would be a shame if they closed it down.  We were in the Puff Inn when i visited.  I was really young around 6 or 7.  I was playing pool with the army guys.  Yes i was in all the museums / tourist type things.  I have photographs somewhere.  St Kilda is incredible.  Such an unforgiving Island.

Have you visited St Kilda yourself Shipmate?

Yes we used to go there twice a year with supplies.
The Army guys always made us welcome as we brought the "nice to have" bits and pieces.
I have wobbled my way back to the jetty a few times!!
The "Puff Inn" was closed last time I was there and the Post Office to get the stamps franked.
