Does anyone have a list of which Solent Class lifeboats were painted white below the waterline, and which were painted red ?
cheers
Andrew
ps. any good links to pictures would be appreciated as dont seem much in the way of obvious places on the Internet

It would depend on where the boat was stationed and if it was a slipway launch or kept afloat on a mooring. A slipway boat would be white as it would have no anti-fouling and an afloat boat would be red as it would be anti-fouled.

Thats a good bit of information thanks.
The two boats Im after are
48-005 when it was on relief at The Lizard - do you know if it would have had The Lizard name on it or Original allocation ? If I remember correctly The Lizard was a slipway launch, but I dont know about the original Peterhead
the other is
48-009 when it was at Exmouth

48-005 should have had The Lizard on the stern as she was the station boat for approx 12 months before joining the relief fleet in August 1988 and as both Peterhead and the lizard were slipway stations when she was there the odds were she had a white bottom.
48-009 had a red hull as like the current Mersey, and previous Trent ALBs she was kept afloat. She still had her red hull when we was moved to Walton and Frinton in 1984. See the picrure below.

As Mike says the Peterhead station was a slipway launch. I've found quite a few photos including one of the launch of the Fraserburgh Solent class lifeboat back in the 70's in colour so should give you an idea.

If you look at the Lifeboats24-7 site you will find the gallery which has a section for old RNLI lifeboats. There are at least a dozen of Solent class boats. There is also a section on Stations with around 70 images. You do have to sign up though but well worth the effort if you want Lifeboat info.

We've only got 870 odd photos of lifeboats and SAR Helicopters ( out of a site size of 51,000 ) but we're getting more and more uploaded all the time

I think there's around 2,500 photos on the Lifeboat site so between them they should cover everything you need :-)) :-))

Indeed guys
- the only thing to do now is work out which font to use for the letter decals - I was trying to avoid using programs like Coreldraw O0

48-005 had a red hull

I would recognise that harbour any day Charlie. She's lying at what we call the "Tarry Pier" in Fraserburgh photo taken from just down from the Harbour masters office looking across to the North Pier with the old Whitelink fish yard just showing ( now demolished along with a corner of the quay..... one of the big trawlers hit it... less said lol .. )
Couldn't tell you the correct name for the "Tarry Pier" as thats what its been called by the fishermen for over 100 years. There used to be a large tar boiler and a mangle. They would dip the herring nets and ropes into the tar and squeeze off the excess in the mangle to preserve the gear ( this is pre-synthetic days )

Found 2 photos of a model of the Peterhead Solent Lifeboat taken at the Peterhead Lido in 1978-79 at the Peterhead Model Boat Club gala day.

So it looks like she had a white hull when at Peterhead ( no need for anti-foul being a slip launch )

Tarry Piers proper name is the Middle Pier http://www.fraserburgh-harbour.co.uk/harbour%20plan.jpg
