Title: A hot Koala
Post by: Peter Fitness on February 04, 2009, 06:06:05 am
A friend of my daughter has a work colleague who lives in Adelaide. During the current heat wave, temperatures of 40+ for days on end, a little koala wandered into their laundry seeking relief from the heat. She filled a bucket with water and put it on the floor - this is what happened. Remember that koalas are normally quite shy wild animals. It was obviously desperate.

They certainly are great photos, I just wish I had taken them. As I said in my original post, they were taken by the wife of a work colleague of a friend of my daughter  :o (I hope you can follow that???)  :D  {-)

Just as a matter of interest, koalas rarely drink, they normally get all the water they need from their diet of eucalyptus leaves. Obviously, due to the extreme heat, this one needed more than it could get from its food.

Mark, I've lived in Australia all my life, and seen lots of koalas, but I've never seen one in water. In fact, they are not often seen on the ground, they spend most of their lives in trees, only coming down to move from one tree to another. See below. This photo I did take.

2 of the photos made it on to our local TV station's weather photo segment. I don't know who sent them, I know I didn't, I can only assume that the lady who took them sent them herself, as her name was mentioned. Apparently my original info was slightly incorrect, the photos were taken near Melbourne, not Adelaide. It seems the koala in the photos was a joey (young koala) and had been abandoned by his mother who was suffering heat stress. However, according to the TV report, the story has a happy ending as both animals were collected by wildlife carers, and are being well looked after.  :-))

I do believe that those photos went viral (what ever that means) by email. It was one of the hottest (no pun) emails to circulate through the net in a long time. Who said that cute was not popular. :-)) :-))

Viral marketting is something a lot of companies do nowdays, my one for a start. The advert or whatever is put on the social network web sites like Facebook people downloading it or pass it on free advertising. It is nowdays one of the fastest ways to advertise something.
