Title: pillar drill

Can any one recommend a reasonably priced Pillar drill or has any one used the bench mounts where you add your own drill,turning that into a pillar drill? if so are they ok?

Hi Chris,

Wouldn't really reccomend the ones where you put your electric drill into a stand, they're not that accurate in drilling a hole at 90 deg to the workpiece.

have a look at the Warco site for engineering tools or Chester UK Ltd or Axminster,  Google any of those and you will come up with many suggestions.

have a look at the drills from screwfix, they have some decent sturdy work bench pillar drills for a very good price, plus next day delivery

what do you want to do with it big holes fine holes etc and how much space ?   Have a look at  http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Machines-Accessories/Milling-Machines/Model-X0-Micro-Mill  this a magic modelers tool as it is not to big and you can work to close tolerances , good if you want to drill stanchions etc and in future you can add a table and mill wood brass plastic etc  , has a digital depth gauge and fine feeds , and is quiet in use, i got one and found it much better than the set up it replaced ( a dremel type and stand).

I have a dremel stand. I was surprised by just how inacurate it is. Especially condsidering the dremel is a fine tool.

I have one too and yes it is not very accurate.

If you are interested in a small unit, Proxxon do a pillar drill for about 135 sterling..

I don't use one often enough to justify the price. I can get a small cheap one here for 40 quid.
I have not had a need for precision yet.  ;)

 Looking for small and cheap ,will probably only use it for model boats and aircraft.

Aldi's (Airdrie, at least) had a pile o' pillar drills in it on Friday. Cheerful, and definitely cheap.
