Title: White Metal Fittings

I am scratch building a 1:48 scale coastal steamer similar to the old Ben Line ships and I need some white metal mast and derrick fittings.

Anyone know where I can get them other than kit manufacturers ?

you can buy most of those fittings as single purchase, dick, from caldercraft/jotika.
at shows they have them all laid out in display boxes for a few pence a fitting.

Right, I rang Jotika on the 8th February to request some information on these fittings, they said they would send me a list.

I rang again today to be told they had not sent it yet.

Does anyone know where else I might get these fittings ? Mainly for masts and derricks.

Have you tried Mobile Marine Models Richard? I bought some blocks from them a week or two ago, came within a couple of days.

Reckoned to get pulleys from them Colin but what I am stuck for is the actual mast and derrick bands and the hinge bit at the bottom of the derrick where it meets the mast.

You could use thin strips of gumstrip paper to make the mast bands, it contracts slightly as it dries. The a bit of sanding sealer or similar before painting. Heads of thin split pins or loops with a tail from thin brass wire will provide the the attachment loops. As far as the hinge is concerned, unless it has to take a strain, you could simply try knocking it up in plasticard.

Hi ya there Richard,

I was supposed to put these couple of pictures on yesterday, but you know these senile moments where you get distracted and forget all about it; well, anyway, there is a picture of the 'derrick' from the Morray Forth - for this one you will see I made the bands from copper wire; bent round a suitable sized tube clipped off to the correct diameter, soldered and then superglued onto the end of the derricks.

The other couple of pictures are the masts of the Frederique Spashett and this is where you will see I have used the brass bands which I cut from tube of the appropraite diameter with a tube cutter and attached various bits of copper wire to form the loops and the eye-bolts and soforth.
