Title: Milford Star my first ever r/c boat build
Post by: gibson on February 18, 2009, 10:27:04 pm
Hi gang,

This is my first post on this brilliant forum so here goes..........
I have not built a r/c boat before and need some advice on what set up I need for the radio gear and where to obtain it.
I bought the Milford Star kit from Westboune models and bought a motor from them which is now installed as is rudder, propshaft and brass prop.
The deck is ready to go on but first I thought I would install the radio gear and test it works but I don't know what to go for.
As this is my first r/c kit I thought I would keep it simple (probably regret it later) and just have a basic two channel set up.

Any advice would be very welcome.

I know this is probably a difficault build to get started with but so far I have really enjoyed it and have picked up so many tips from all you guy's from your build threads that I have read especially from Dicky D on his Milford Star.

I look forward to becoming more involved in the model boat world and maybe life begins at 50 !!

I hope I've done this right as my IT skills are very basic .........

Dale.

PS......How do I add photo's???????...........please help

Hi Gibson, and welcome to the madhouse forum.

To add photos, go to the bottom of the "reply" page, click "Additional Options" and you will see "Attach" and "Browse". Click "Browse" and navigate to where your photos are kept on your computer, then double click the selected photo. Then simply click "Post".

Note, though, that photos are to be no bigger than 161 kb each. There are some good, free, photo resizers available on the internet, such as VSO Image Resizer, available here http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/download-image-resizer.php (http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/download-image-resizer.php)

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the advice for adding photo's,

I followed your instructions and all was going well but as you suggested my file is bigger than 161 kb and so it was rejected........
I will have a look at the resizer's you mentioned........learn something every day!!

Thanks again

Dale, if you set the resolution to 800 x 600, you will keep the file size down without affecting the quality of the photo. You can also add up to 12 photos per post by clicking "More attachments", alongside the "Browse" button.

Hi all........

This is where I'm at......

I welcome any advice, I expect and welcome any critism and I am very willing to learn.....

I have just turned 50 and last year was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my hands, wrists and shoulders........too many years of manual work so I was told.........not the type to give up so was looking for something to keep the brain active and keep the hands moving although that is limited to what I can do.

Well the brain will certainly be active with these instructions........

The last model I built was a Tamiya r/c car for my son.......15years ago........well, in at the deep end I suppose with this one!!

I will do my best to keep this thread going,

Bye for now

Dale.

Hi Dale,
the instructions are very, let's say, limited. The pictures of DickyD's build will be very helpful. If you need close-up pics you can go to my post "new member - and  my new Milford Star" or I can provide extra pics.

Good luck
Wilhelm

Hi Dale

Glad to see you think my build might be helpful.

As for radio gear it depends how much you want to spend. I myself kept to two channel and bought the Futaba 40AM Attack radio.

I have used a Mtronic Viper Marine 15 Plug n Play Esc. Nice simple one with no set up.

I am also using 2/ 6V 4amp SLA batteries connected to run on 6V.

Before you fix your electrics and deck make sure everything will be accessable when the deck is fixed down.

If you need any help in trying to figure out the instructions give me a yell, I think I worked out most of them.  :-))

Hi dale and welcome. You definitely joined the right site here.

Just a quick one which you may be aware of. I notice on the photos, what I presume is a rudder post, sticking up through the hull. Don't forget to strengthen it. You could drill a hole through a block of wood and epoxy it in place over the top.

Looking forward to seeing more..

Barry

Dale

With that type of battery pack you are going to need a lot of ballast as she is very top heavy.

I have 2No 6V 4Ah SLA batteries in mine.
Title: Re: Milford Star my first ever r/c boat build
Post by: gibson on February 24, 2009, 08:57:59 pm
Hi Richard,

I went back to Westbourne models (I bought the kit from them) for the r/c gear and I took the information you kindly gave me with your r/c gear with me.......this is the battery they advised and being a bit green I took their advice.....

When i did the float test in the bath I realised a lot of balast will be needed.......

Should I change the battery????

Thanks

dale.

See what you think when you get the superstructure on but before you fit front derrick.

Reckon you might have to.

You can get a rough idea if you mark the water line and see how high she floats, should be more or less on the line. :-))
Title: Re: Milford Star my first ever r/c boat build
Post by: gibson on March 09, 2009, 07:53:56 pm

Progress has been slow but I realise I should probably started with something a little easier. {:-{
I now have the radio gear all in place and have been adding balast to get her down to the water line
with the battery pack I have.
I reckon I'll need 2.5kg.

I have to say that I am enjoying building her so far.

Title: Re: Milford Star my first ever r/c boat build
Post by: gibson on March 09, 2009, 08:26:59 pm
OOP's sorry about the mistake with the pics......I'm still trying to get the hang of this!!

I painted the hull a bit prematurely but i wanted to get the ballast secure and needed the a decent waterline to work to in the bath.

With the ballast in place I then glued in the decks and filled balwarks etc with p38 to achieve a smooth finish.

That's it so far....

Hi Dale

Coming along nicely.

Did you support the rudder tube near the top ?

If you are going to sail in anything other than a dead calm you will need to cut openings where your washport covers are or your deck will fill up with water.

You will also have to figure out how to waterproof your front hatch.

Post by: gibson on March 09, 2009, 08:50:40 pm
Hi Richard,

I did drill a piece of ply and fitted it over the rudder shaft with epoxy and then resin......hope this is enough {:-{

I have been wandering about the wash ports as I noticed on your's (after I had fitted my covers) that you cut them out completely.

I just followed the instructions but have realised thats probably not a good idea!! <*<

Thanks

Dale.

To be honest I'm a bit embarrassed about showing my pics especially when I look at some of the build threads on here and see the amazing quality of the work but
I am appreciating all the comments and advice and above all it is helping me with the build.

Thanks for the photo and the advice Richard  :-))

I shall add another support at the top of the rudder.

Looking further ahead, I havn't a clue where I'm going to eventually sail her?

I am in Dorset, between Blandford and Shaftesbury, does anyone know of a club in the area or anywhere suitable for sailing.

Not sure what to do about the washports now.....anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks again

Dale.

There is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. Your build is excellent. I know there is always someone better out there, but we all have to learn and I am sure that many are learning from following your thread. Keep it up.

Hi Dale,

As Richard mentioned. I'm a North Dorset resident too, actually living in Gillingham. I belong to two clubs, Shepton Mallet Drifters and Yeovil Model Warships, they are about the nearset clubs to our area. Drifters meet at Collet Park, on the first Sunday of every month, the Yeovil Warships at Halfway House, on the A37 between Yeovil and Ilchester, with access to the water every day, any time.
Don't be put off by the name, we cater for all types of boat except ic. If you need any more information, don't be afraid to contact me via PM (personal message) Hope this helps.

Hi Dale, without any open washports open any water that gets on the deck will go straight inside through the front hatch under the fish pools.

With the washports shut you are forming a bucket to collect water.

Nice job by the way. :-))

Hi Richard,

I can see your point and think I will have to do something about opening up at least a couple of washports on both sides.

Thanks again for the advice.

PS. I have now supported the rudder tube at the top as well as the bottom as you mention earlier.

Bob,

I hope this answers your question too.

Thanks guy's

Hi Dale
I've almost finished building an Imara tug and have opened up the washports and made some decent coamings. This is very important because as someone has mentioned already unless you have adequate drainage the deck will be like a bucket with dire consequences!!
They are not hinged on my boat but fixed, leaving a gap of about 3mm which is plenty wide enough to get rid of the wet stuff.
Hope this helps
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the photo and advice......anymore pics of your Imara on the forum? :-))

I have decided that I will have to open up some of the washports, at least a couple on each side.

Being a complete novice at this I didn't even give it a thought when I started building her (no mention in the instructions)

I will probably leave it to the weekend to get the Demel in action........not looking forward to it though!! {:-{

Thanks again

Dale.

Hi Chaps,

I'll try and keep this short.
Health problems that led to some considerable financial difficulty over the last 2 years or so has meant that my Milford Star has been in storage for all that time until today.
We are now settled into a  little one bed place.... but at least it's ours.
I have been setting up a little build area and today upacked the boat etc from it's wrapping and started to get to know it again......I'd forgotten how vague the instructions are.
If it's ok with you guys I would like to continue with this blog and hopefully see it through to the end.

Hi Dale,

I have like the rest of us been watching your cracking build with much interest and admiration, your beautifully painted hull in particular showing her gorgeous traditional lines, did you know that there is one in Sales built by a gentleman from Wales (could be the first line to An Ode To The Milford Star?!) which I liked the look of that much that I was prepare to drive the 440 or so miles from my home in Scotland to buy her, unfortunately my car blew its head gasket after 120 miles at Carlisle and so we all had to be returned home by rescue truck after payment of an exorbitant fee...yours too will look great on the water, they all ooze the elegant lines, traditional style and thoroughly boaty appearance of a seemingly bygone age and are well worth the build challenges that many have encountered and overcome...thank you for sharing your progress and pics!

Hello Dale, I have been considering having a go at building this ship, but I have not been near a model for a very long time, work, marriage, kids, etc. I have recently retired from work and am looking for an additional hobby to do alongside mountain biking and photography. I am an absolute new boy but like a challenge. Having read this thread from start to finish I was wondering if it would be possible if you could give me some advice on this build, such as pitfalls, tools etc. I would be more than happy for you to email me off group at ***email address removed***
From the pictures you have posted I can see that it is going to be an excellent representation of the real thing, that is if it is not finished yet.
Kind regards from Cumbria, Tom

***For your own security best not post your email addresses on an open forum.***   :-)

If you need to communicate privatley use the PM/IM system.
However, I am sure there would be a lot of interest in discussions of this build.
