The  Panzer III  £89.99 inc p&p. comes with metal gearboxes and tracks.

The Tiger I  £109.99 INC P&P had to get gearbox and track conversion and do it myself.

The Tiger, I've taken the figure off to the workshop (my bedroom ;) ) to be repainted. As I'm sure you're well aware, he's green, very green. He even has green hair. So I scrubbed him down a bit, lopped a bit off the bottom to make him sit better in the hatch, have painted him in Tamiya flat base, and given him the first coat of black. Doesn't look very tidy at the moment, but he will when I'm done.

The moulding of him itself is actually absolutely superb. Very crisp and features some very good details. He is missing his Swastika's, but I suppose they're politically incorrect now?

Swastika,s their only politically incorrect in Germany, and to me a German model that has a swastika, is incorrect if that swastika, is ommtted,my big Tiger has the aerial recog flag, showing,as this is the way they were in reality,so to omit it,would make the model less authentic looking, see pic

I fully agree with you Wullie. Very nice weathering on both tanks :-)). I can't find where my favorite weathering system (Tamiya Weathering Master) wandered off to, so I can't do much to mine until I find it. It looks pretty good as it is, and not something a few minuits playing around in some mud can't solve anyway ;)

How was the Zimmerit applied to yours Wullie? Or was it on the model when you bought it? It's an armourtek tank is it not?
Title: Re: Heng Long Tank
Post by: Wasyl on August 26, 2009, 11:30:06 pm
Hi,the zimmerit is decorators caulk,it was not applied by me,i,ve just done the paint job,and as for being an Armortek, well, believe it or not,the majority of this tank is plastic,It a Field of Armour kit, well it started out as a FOA,but its had a good many ad ons,the cupola is metal as is the hatches, side fenders, exhaust covers, its got a full metal sub chassis,2 x 350w 24v motors, turret rotation, full Tamiya sound system, and lots of nice weathering,
You,ve made a great job of yours,

Wullie

Sorry for the quality of the photo's, they were on my phone.

He's been painted up properly, I then gave him a reasonable coating of Tamiya X19 Semi Gloss Smoke, to give him a smokey tinge, seeing as I painted his top in Matt Black, it's given it a nice dull sheen. Here's the finished product:

Theres loads of bits'n'bobs on Ebay for these tanks, figures, metal tracks half decent tools etc.

My Tiger is well started on its weathering, Ill do some pics if you like?
My Zimmerit was done with 'No More Nails', left to dry for an hour and picked off here and there to give a worn look, I used a tool made from parts of a comb to make the stripes, with tools of varying numbers of teeth to suit the area being worked on.

The HL Tigers are innacurate in several areas and require work to rectify, but if your on this forum you should have no trouble sorting them out.
The commanders hatch opens the wrong way, it should open to line up with the hinges on the other hatch when open.
The pistol firing port is the wrong way round.
The antenna is in the wrong place.
There should be only one antenna tube.
The lifting 'mushrooms' on the turret are missing.
The barrel is too short.
The barrel mount is also wrong way round, but there are loads of webpages illustrating how to rectify all these. When you have the tank open, its a simple matter to make the exhaust actually come through the exhaust pipes. I have a US Pershing, fully operational and with only minor damage if anyones interested in a swap too. (wrong period for me)

From your description of your HL Tiger,This is one of the very 1st models to come out of HL, The later ones are more accurate,i.e. mantlet is the correct way round,i.e. looking from the front, the rangefinder is on the right, the early Tigers had the twin port sight, and later models have the single port,
There are many inaccuracies, with HL Tigers, just as there is with the more expensive Tamiya,s,but its all down to taste,If your a purist then you have to do it right,if on the other hand, you feel that you can live with the little mistakes, these cheap tanks are great value for the money, and are great stand off models,
As for your offer of a swap,
you,re in the wrong section,try scrolling down to wanted/swaps  {:-{

You're right, there are many inaccuracies, but it's one hell of a model for £40. I'll get round to sorting them out soon.

I took mine to my radio club this evening and both all the elderlies and the 10 year old didn't want to let go of it. We had competitions to see who could shoot the polystyrene cup, then ran over it a few times. Climbed all the mud hills. Great fun. When you're having as much fun as that you don't even care about the inaccuracies. I think models being accurate is just for when they're at home or on display, not for when you're playing with them :-))

I think the 'mistakes' were intentional, the HL is a straight copy of the Tamiya, that was their way of saying there were plenty of differences so it wasnt a copy. I think theyre great for the money, pity they dont do a T-34, I think the only way is convert another less well equipped offerings.

WishList = A T-34, Sherman FireFly and a King Tiger.    :}

You're most likely right.

My wishlist is a Challenger 2 and some form of amphibious AFV. It would be great to convert an APV to proper radio gear O0

A T34/85 you do get them in 1/16 their made by WSN,there full rc ,they are a bit thin on the ground now,a couple of years ago there were loads on ebay, but now just the odd one,as for a KT,you can get the 1/16 Matorro, version, there good value for money,or you can dig really deep and buy mine, see pic {-)

I would love to have one, but very expensive and would probably have to forego other toys, maybe even sell some boats.

Just wish we had a dried summer up here, I was loooking forward to getting some more work done on a stand-off scale Tiger Im doing.

Thanks for the links Richard. I assume the Tiger is the most popular going by the amount of detail bits for it. I also like the Bulldog tank but doesn't seem to be many add ons for that!

I see Hobby Engine do a M1 Abrams Battle Tank anyone any experience with these?

Keep an eye on eBay.  They generally go pretty cheap but if you're lucky you could pick up a real bargain.  I have just bought one second hand but in perfect condition and in it's box.  It had metal tracks and gearboxes, metal cupola, speed control, smoke and sound, zimmerit, brass etch engine grilles and all for £100.00.  Very pleased and the metal tracks look fantastic going over rough ground.  It's going to get some detail and a weathering job when I can stop playing in the garden with it!!

The quality of early Heng Long products was very dodgy, improved no end now. I have a Pershing, the Grandchildren love it, as I do,lots of faults in detail (Pershings were rough cast hulls, not smooth, but who cares!!) I took the Yank  Commander out and with some filler and paint turned him into a Brit, complete with Beret and Tank Regiment badge! Somewhere ,sometime ,maybe some Brits drove Pershings! When equipped with the British 17 pdr gun, they were "Tiger Killers," and were very effective, had a long history, served in Korean War as well.
If you want 1\16th scale bits and bobs for them, try Imperial Models here in Germany, they have loads!! Even do an exchange service for Gearboxes etc. Speak English, worth a try!

Henlong Jagdpanthers are very good value for money now,you can get an all singing and dancing version for £79 +postage, compared to a £120 this time last year, the same goes for the Stug and the Panzer111 and the 1V,..The Mattoro Kingtiger is another good buy, then there,s the 1/24 VS tanks,, Forces of Valour are doing the 1/24 scale in Rc also, with the Sherman and Tiger

Yeah, they look fine, but what happens when spring comes around and all the snow has melted, now your white KT,s stick out like a sore thumb,at least when you use chalk whitewash,it can be washed off a little ,then you have that well worn look, unlike Tamiya paint,

Just a thought, my tank has got damaged just by changing batteries or even switching on!! How do you avoid doing this? I lift it in and out of the carry box with a cord with hooks that engage the lifting hooks on the Hull. Changing the batteries is the worst as the vehicle needs to be upside down and the hatch unscrewed
