Title: Brass shim
Post by: flashtwo on March 08, 2009, 10:16:01 am
Hi,
I'm just aligning my Stuart D10 to the boat's prop shaft and it needs a piece of 12 thou' brass shim, 4" x 1".

I see that Chronos does a shim pack at about £33, but does anyone know where small quantities can be obtained from?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ian.

Ian,

For very fine metal shimming, I use packs made up from layers of ali cooking foil, usually 0.001" thick. Soft drink and beer cans will do the job just as well for thicker sizes.

It costs nothing, as the wife buys the cooking foil, and you enjoy the contents of the cans beforehand.

Thanks very much Phil, I thought I would have to snap the 12 thou' blade off my set of feeler gauges in desperation - I appreciate your help to get the flash steam test bed on the water by Easter!

I ought to think of a name for the craft, "Flash Git" comes to mind.

If you need 'thick shim' like this (28swg) it might be held by model railway suppliers for making etched brass models.
