Title: 34" or is it 30" Ship Handling Tug...
Post by: norry on March 21, 2009, 11:42:56 AM
      ...Hi Guys...

Here are a couple of pictures of my latest Tug-Towing Tug...

Why have a 34" Multi Purpose Tug for Tug Towing when a 30" Ship Handling Tug could do a better job...

I have decided to shorten my Model Slipway "DUTCH COURAGE" for Tug-Towing purposes...

What do You Think ?...                        ...Best Regards...Norry...

   ... Hi Guys...

I am building this Tug purely for Tug-Towing or Ship Handling as it is sometimes called...
In this build I am drawing from experience of controlling both real & model tugs in Working Conditions...
The "DUTCH COURAGE" hull is beamy enough to take all the necessary Electrics etc So why have Extra Length that will only get in the way when in a tight corner...Just ask your local Tug Skipper what he thinks of that theory...Same Power & Manouverability in a Shorter Hull...
In my opinion it will make a big difference when working in a tight dock or harbour...
It will be fitted out with 2 x 12 volt Marx Hectoperm Motors driving 70mm Kort Props in Steerable Kort Nozzles...
A Bow Thruster is already fitted...Working Forward & After Towing Winches will also be fitted...
Maybe when the Balne Moor, Ellesmere Port or Wirral "professionals" read this they will let us know what they think of my project...

HI NORRY
GOOD IDEA MATE
I USE A WYEFORCE TYPE HULLED TUG WITH TWIN STEARABLE KORTS BUT NO BOW THRUSTER
I TOW FROM THE BOW ONLY AS I FIND THAT SHE STEERS MUCH BETTER GOING ASTERN
THE TUG IS THE REAGARTH AND IF YOU LOOK AROUND THIS SITE YOU WILL SEE PICS OF HER
GOOD LUCK WITH THE BUILD NORRY

Hi Norry, looks good, Have you had the hull in the bath with all the gear inside yet to see what it's like on the water line, taking 4in out makes a lot of difference. you may have to change the motor size for weight.
Regards.

...Hi John...

I have thought of that...I will do bath tests later Today...If there is a problem with weight of motors I could always put the 2 12 Decaperms in instead of Hectoperms, But I think it will be OK as it is...
I,ll Let you know the outcome of the Ballast Trials...

Are you going to the North East Show this weekend...We are coming down a run on Sunday...

   ...Hi Guys...

I carried out Bath Trials this morning  & apart from finding a small leak at the Bow Thruster it went fine...

I had 3 x 12volt 7amh Batteries in the hull & it didn,t reach its waterline...I was going to put 2 Batteries in the hull & i dont think the Motors etc will weigh as much as a 12volt 7amh Battery which is over 5lbs...

We Shall See...

If she is anything like the un cut version i find it tends to dip down in the water under load , just make sure there are no leaks on the deck .

...Hi Daz...

I dont think I will be building the Deckhouse or Wheelhouse that comes with the kit...

I am thinking more of something like my other Working Tug which is a DAMEN Shoalbuster type Workboat...

I dont think a Ship Handling Tug would have big funnels like" D.C." they tend to block a lot of vision from the Wheelhouse...

I am fitting much larger Kort Nozzles as well so I will have to make some sort of keel system as well....Hope fully this will act as a stabilizer & stop a lot of Rolling when under load...Real Tugs heel over a bit under load ...

This build is completely "Suck It & See" ...Who knows what the final outcome will look like...

...Best Regards...Norry...

...Hi Guys...
                             ...The story So Far...

I have the Forward Deck, Deckhouse and Wheelhouse ready for painting...Drive Shafts were fitted tonight so i can go ahead and fit the Main Tow Deck now & reshape the Aft Bulwarks...

I am considering making another Wheelhouse from Clear plastic sheeting and painting in the Frames and therefore leaving clear windows...

Wee Johnny has chosen the name "FREEDOM" and the colour scheme of Royal Blue hull with White Upperworks...

...Best Regards...Norry...

...Hi Daz...

As it states in my previous postings, Most of the work is being done on the night shift...Just check the time of the postings....

Thats the only time that i can get peace from my 3 year old son Harry...Whenever I,m in the workroom then so is he or its mega temper tantrums...Once he gets in then its hide the tools and keep everything out of his reach...That then makes boatbuilding a wee bit difficult...

Anyway Good Luck in your search for a Tug of your own...I will keep a look out up here for a decent boat for you...

...Best Regards From Bonnie Scotland...

Hi Norry,

A question, where did you get the fore and aft winches from?

Darren.

...Hi Darren...

The Winches are from the "TITO NERI" kit...You can buy them seperate from the model shop...

I also put these winches on my DAMEN Shoalbuster model which has now been sold...
