This has actually been discussed already a few times in the past and I'm sure that if the government thought they could weather the wave of unpopularity then they wouldn't hesitate.
Don't forget one of the best ambassadors this country has ever had in the shape of HMY Britannia was decommissioned without a care for the consequences. At the time I was lucky enough to be shown a set of plans for a replacement vessel that was to be a joint ownership venture between the monarchy and business interests with the vessel serving a dual purpose of being a royal yacht as well as a business conference centre. It was projected at the time that the vessel could pay for itself but it still wasn't taken any further.
Unfortunately when it comes to national treasures I don't think any government has the right to sell them off. We are talking about assets that have been with us for many years being sold by a group of bumbling idiots passing through trying to make a name for themselves and cling on to office before thier partners video prefernces are discovered or we realise just how much they are skinning the taxpayer for to support thier house buying projects.

...So how do we start an e-petition on the No 10 site??
-
Bunkerbarge is right. These things are part of our heritage and a short lived Government (many of whose members are appallingly ingnorant about history) have no right to take decisions of this nature.

I still think Flogging them through the fleet and then Hanging them from Victory's Mainyard is the best answer.. But then I am a bit old fashioned about these sort of things (Walking the plank and Keelhauling are out because she's in dry dock)

Even better!

There are currently 41 admirals, vice-admirals and rear-admirals but with constant cuts the number of fighting ships in the Navy now stands at just 40.
The "gold braid" of Navy chiefs is made up of two admirals, six vice admirals and 33 rear admirals.
The 41 admirals will draw an estimated salary of £6.7 million.
One Victory and 41 Admirals.
Hmmmmmmmmm could be they would be better off selling a few admirals. {:-{

Have to think about selling the Top brass ----- <*<Naaa!!! --- :-))Sell the P.M. & the M.P's. instead... I'm sure there are People in say, Afganistan who would pay a good price... then we could shift most of our problems to people who really deserve them ---AND --- Repaire the Victory -------sort of kill two birds with one stone. ............What do you Think?????

They have Admirals in charge of naval bases as well as ships.
-
How many admirals are actually on ships then Colin ?
-
No idea Richard, I suppose you only need them when you have a fleet putting to sea and I don't think we can muster one now. But isn't that pirate patrol off the Horn of Africa under British command - in which case there might be one there...
The Commodore of the Dartmouth Naval College that I met last year has gone to take over one of the Scottish bases and they promoted him to Rear Admiral.

Not quite true, Colin. The Dockyards are "run" by and in charge of the Civil Service. The bits the Admiral is in charge of are the ships. That's why ships are an encumbrance to the Dockyard!. In The USA the "Yards" are run by the Navy...a logical and effectice way. BY.

What a simply preposterous idea, selling Victory to the French?? I would rather see her go up in a ball of ceremonial fire than see her go that way! Perhaps we could keep the funeral pyre going with a few suits from Westminster!

Did you you know it is illegal to display your national flag on your registration/license plate?
in 2001 the UK up held and passed the EU law to ban any national recognition on your registration plate, it carries a fine of £60.00 with no appeal allowed under EU law, also includes the Scottish Saltire. Welsh dragon, St Georges cross etc etc.
Regarding the guy with the mini, according to the Police, if you have a union jack on your car roof its classed as racism, as it could be offensive to other people that aren't British. They told him that he has seven days to remove the graphics or could be given an asbo or worse.
