Most students of the law will be familiar with the infamous "Carbolic Smoke ball case" as it forms a legal precedence of some significance.

However, for this topic its relevance is that in the 19th century this product was advertised as a cure all. You placed this bomb like contraption in the middle of the room, lit a fuse and it emitted carbolic fumes which - it was claimed - cured everything from toothace to ingrowing toe nails!

The gullibility of some folk is incredible.

I once prosecuted a case for a device which "....transformed your deadly dull black and white television into amazing colour". It was a bit of sticky plastic which you stuck onto the screen of your TV. the top third was blue, the middle third was red and the lower third was green. i just showed the court a TV sequence of a dentist operating, through this marvellous product and achieved an immediate conviction.

One week later I got letters from the public telling me it was a "marvellous invention"!

I rest my case your honour!

Back in the 1800's Coca Cola used to have cocaine in it, that is how it got part of its name.

I think that back then there was a mixture of opium and alcohol called "Kendal Black" that Coleridge was addicted to.  He didnt dare sleep, because of the dreams.
In a supermarket offies section in Cyprus a couple of years ago I spotted Cannabis Absinthe.  In litre bottles

I thought Coleridge wrote Xanadu under the influence! (the poem not the pop song!)

Coleridge was certainly addicted to opium. As CB said he was under the influence and writing when a messenger boy arrived and broke his concentration on "Xanadu".

But what a superb poet! Great chunks of "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" just became implanted in my memory the first time I read it......................

"The very deep did rot, oh Christ that ever this should be.
Yea slimy things with scaly legs crawled on a crystal sea
"...........................................or something like that.

Not a remedy but a con non the less was  here in Australia in one of the most popular magazines an advert appeared stating how this person could show you "How to cut all your bills in half" send $10. He sent you a pair of kiddies scissors and showed you how to fold your bills in half and cut along the fold. He made a lot of money until the law caught up with him.
