Blimey, after my troubles with Talktalk a couple of months ago I was going to swap back to Tiscali.
after reading a post by one poor guy on Ships nostalgia forum about Tiscali I decided against it. glad I did, now.
I'm just sorry for all those caught without, genuinely, as I couldn't do withoput my  internet service.
Lets hope someone takes the customers on without too much disruption. :-))

God help you, the talk talk jingle after 3 hours on the phone can brain wash you , at least you get a trip around the world of all the call centres on each call

it was in the news recently that talk talk where trying to sell of the broadband side, so I wonder what will happen if you have free broad band of them for having a telephone of them

Martin, I run a business using my internet connection, and have had no problems with Sky at all. The wireless router was a doddle to set up, so home networks are straightforward.

You might like to try Googling "Orange problems" if you have a few hours to spare - definitely one to avoid!

If you google "company name + problem" it seems that every company has problems or has had them.  This probably means that any company that lacks problems, is going to get them.
A lot of trouble stems from the "local loop unbundling" that made much of the new service providers possible.  While we now basically have the choice of which accounts department we pay our bills to, they also, at the same time have a whole collection of other people to hide behind and blame if anything goes pear shaped.
Personally, I would avoid any company that has a fault reporting service that uses a charged number, if its standard rate, thats bad enough, if its premium rate, thats a company to avoid.

An open letter to Martin.
Reading all this "doom and gloom" business, I began to wonder what would happen if you "pulled the plug" on this site. Would all the info. contained within it just disappear as in a wisp of cloud? Or do you think "someone" else would take it over? This is just me in a "dark" mood...so the question is both rhetorical and hypothetical. But what would happen? Nothing lasts forever, and sooner or later you will say to yourself "enough". Cheerily yours, BY.

I Dunno Bryan, I try not to think about it.

Don't worry, Mayhem is not hosted on Tiscali, it's hosted on a company in the States,
( I couldn't find a company in the UK that could provide the same service at the time)
and I back up the post at least once or twice a week.

Any way , is it bad news for Tiscali Customers  ? as it looks like they have been taken over by the Carphone warehouse , which will give them approx 25% of the B/band Market so the reports say.

As regards Martin & Mayhem  , its the trials and tribulations of this site which keep him looking so youthful.  :}

Put this link in your favourites folder and you can have instant access into what is happening on broadband in the UK.

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/

I used it a few months ago to have a look at the better suppliers, and ended up at Be Broadband, which at the time was the best. I now enjoy a four times speed improvement over my old supplier of Plusnet, and cheaper as well. The helplines are great, answered quickly and staffed by people who know what they are talking about, rather than reading from a crib sheet in some foreign dialect. Also they reply to query tickets very quickly, and by email, so you can reply back and reach the same person who is dealing with your problem. Plus, and a major bonus, they do listen to you, rather than sending you thru the check this, check that route every time. I have only had minor problems with my line, sometimes slowing down a little (by about 1 or 2 mb), but put a ticket in, and within a couple of days, I am up to full stable line speed again, then they contact me back to tell me what they are doing to cure the problem. One thing that is different with some of these suppliers is that you pay for what you want. I took the email option of an extra £2 a month, and that gives me 5 full email addresses, each with its own storage area. I also have a fixed IP address as standard.

So really, your ideal supplier can be found, you just have to do a little research beforehand, and don't be sucked in by the all in one 'lemming' offers from the big boys.

You cannot really go by other peoples recommendations, unless they live next door to you, there are just too many variables involved.

I don't want lemming Sky or other 'give it all' operators in my home, because I don't need them. So I pick and choose what I want, and get the best of what is available, not what someone is willing to give me for 'free'. Nothing is free in this world, you will be paying for it somehow, or the service is so bad, it isn't worth having in the first place.

You pay your money, and make your choice.

But don't scream and rant when the 'big cheap boys' can't give you a good service because they have too many people all complaining at the same time. The bigger they get, the worse it will become, and that is a proven fact.

When I phone my supplier, they ask for my name and postcode, not a customer number. Plus I don't have to have reams of paper in front of me to answer all their questions. Only a little thing, but it does makes me feel respected and wanted.

John

For years i have tried in vain to get a broadband connection where i live , every tom dick and harry out there in the internet buisness prommises me the earth , then when i tell them my post code i get a silence then sorry broadband is not available in your area .
So i get mine from BT with an avarage speed of 32kbs which can be as low as 2kbs and up to 120kbs .
A recent conversation with a bt enginear who told me that out cables were well over 50 years old and made from alloy snaked along the river and roads for over 30 miles although the exchange is less than 2 miles away, recently an old bridge was replaced and the council who owned it asked bt if they would like a conduit/ cable running along with other utilitys under the river as they were replacing the existing ones , there was a charge for this and bt asked the companys (tiscalli, orange etc ) if they would contribute . i am still on the old line so you can guess what they said , but they will still "xxxxx" off bt when a coustomer is not getting the speeds they were promsed .
At the end of the day bt own the line (except in Hull area, karoo) and sell the use of it to everyone else .
daz
at the moment 54kbs
