unforunately sold out, but looks like just what I'm looking for. any ideas how it works, and what they would be using as smoking oil??
-
I 've used old engine oil , 3 & 1 oil , baby oil and olive oil also WD40 they all work in my rig which is a bit of burning charcoal from a pocket/hand warmer on an oily rag
you get lots of smoke "but its not black but light grey" and very little heat

thanks jimmy, light grey is better than nothing, I like the handwarmer charcoal idea, what do you use as a container?

By all means, post some photos of your contraption if you wouldn't mind since we'll all trying to get to that elusive grey black smoke. :-))

Sorry for the delay... The rig is very simple make a Tin box approx 3 inches long X 1.5 inches wide X 0.75 inches deep ( I use old Beer or Coke tins as a source of metal on models ....makes every thing from gun Shields & Turrets to Hull plates, very light weight.. easy to work ...and costs almost nothing) mount the open topped box on a slightly larger bit of ply (use 1 or 2small self tappers) fit a small bit of wire mesh or use thin copper wire and thread it through the sides of the box to make a grate approx .25" off the bottom of the box and fit the box approx 2" below the open base of the funnel making sure it is easily removable (I often stick mine on top of the battery with blue tack (6v 10Ah gellcell)) if you have a thin plastic funnel mount a heat deflector (tin bent in an inverted "V"shape like a roof with a hole to guide the smoke up the funnel approx .5" inch below the deckhead) .... To make smoke... go to you're local friendly fishing tackle shop and buy some charcoal sticks for pocket warmers....... cut a bit of soft rag (old T=shirts work great) and fold it 3 or 4 times to make a pad and lay the pad in the box on the grate... pore on a drop of oil and wait tell it soaks into the rag ..... breake about an inch off one of the charcoal sticks ... light it and blow on the end until it glows then lay it on the rag ..... presto instant smoke.... Beware the heaver the oil the more smoke ..and the more smell ... unless you want to use baby oil ...... I have also used WD 40, White spirit Olive oil, old engine oil and Vaseline

If you don't want the hassle of making a tin box then an oblong sardine or pilchard tin is ideal.
-
Spot on Sam, an old tickler tin works as well

Tickler - now there's an expression I've not heard in over thirty years! Not since working with the FAA in the mid seventies.

I better be carefull not only shows off my age but one of the character's reading this is likely to start a new line of spot the old naval expression's... My Wife & Daughters are allways pulling me up on things like that... questions like, Dad why do you say your going ashore when you mean your going to the pub...or why do you secure the car instead of locking it up like the rest of us.....When they start I just grab my kit and nip ashore for a Large Pinkers.
