Title: Economics
Post by: omra85 on April 26, 2009, 09:14:57 PM
We're hearing constantly about how many zillions the government is borrowing and now the Tories think it's time for the great unwashed to enter a period of 'austerity' (not the politicians obviously!) and we will not have paid it back for 23 years...

Now - without going into politics too deeply (this is a model boating forum after all) - can someone please tell me -

who are the government borrowing the money FROM   {:-{

Hi Danny,

The government borrows its money from anyone who buys gilts. That means, if you have a pension fund, it is probably you.

During our last little skirmish with the Hun, His Maj's Government decided that anyone who was found to be due a rebate of income tax for any reason would not be given the cash. Instead, to assist with beating Hitler, they were issued with certificates called Post War Credits. These would be refunded - with interest - after the cessation of hostilities.
Yep - in 1970-frozen-to-death, Her Maj's Government finally gave the lucky investors back their dosh. Strangely it was found that many had passed away in the interim and that relatives could not be traced "for lack of resources*". Guess where the money ended up.
Do the maths and weep.

*I was one of those scant resources.
