Title: Small diameter stainless rod
Post by: monarch on May 17, 2009, 10:12:16 am
Hi All
Does anyone know where I can get 1.7mm dia stainless rod.  Need to tap ends 10ba to fit servo linkage but can't find anywhere that sells the stuff.

Cornwall Model Boats sells M2 steel rod already threaded for standard servo linkage, any good ?

Contact Mike Mayhew at Waverley Models. He has sent me some offcuts in the past which are pretty much that size.

Is there any fabrication workshops around you, TIG stainless steel welding rod comes in 1.6mm so you could get some for free.

Try yer local welding shop that does Stainless fabrications, they should have various grades of straight rods. Usually about a metre long.

1.7mm = 0.0669" while 1/16" = 0.0625. That's a difference of 0.0044" and given that stock metal is rarely spot-on in size, is unlikely to make any difference at all to a 10BA thread. Try Folkestone Engineering Supplies at www.metal2models.btinternet.co.uk for 1/16" stainless at 45pence/300mm. I've always had good service from him.

Cheers,

Barry M

Hi All
Thanks for all inputs, the 1/16" stainless will do fine.
Seems allmost impossible to get 1.7mm anyway.
Just got to wait for my lathe to arrive and by a tailstock die holder then job done.
Cheers all :-))
