Title: HMS Warspite
Post by: gingyer on October 29, 2006, 08:37:21 pm
Hi all,
it is my intention to build a model of HMS Warspite
does anyone know if you can get a 1:96th scale hull for
it. I saw PSSHIPs post about 1/72nd scale battleships
but for me a 1/72nd model is a bit big and fleetscales
1/128 is a bit on the small side any help
will be gratefully received

With such a ship as this - fully documented and with plans freely available -  why not build the hull your self (plank on frame) and save about £900?

Hi Rick,
Have came to the conclusion of building
the hull myself. will have to remember how to build
hulls again as i got lazy and kept buying GRP ones for
my last few models.

Paul, hope the warspite kit your launching does well
as I said before it is a bit on the big side for myself.

regards
Colin

Gingyer,

There are plenty of builds illustrated on here - including one of mine (he said, modestly!!) - so it shouldn't be too hard to pick it all up again. One thing you can guarantee is that if you have a problem or question there will be plenty of people willing to chip in with an answer!

How long is a 1:96 Warspite?

Good luck.

Rick

hi  rick
at 1:96th scale the warspite should be 6'6" long and 11"wide.
I think its a good size I have some other warships about the 6' size,
although at various scales

Hi
took the plunge and have built a hull for the warspite. The hull is in the process of being sanded at the moment.
once I have it completed I am going to use it as a mould and make a fibreglass hull.
will post some pictures once it is finished being sanded.

Hi ya Gingyer

when you built the hull for HMS Warspite, did you build it and plank it with the torpedo bulges on or off?  The reason I ask is because it is going to be (I would say difficult, but an awkward mould to do) because of the torpedo bulges.

aye

Hi there Bluebird,

I am still finishing off the hull, I have built the hull with the torpedo bulges in place,
I realise this would be difficult to mould in one piece so I will make the mould in two sections.

This being the theory it should be OK  :'(

I will post some pictures of the hull when finished and prior
to moulding that way if it does go pear shaped we can all at least
get a bit of a giggle of what could have been

Hi there Gingyer - how much hull detail are you going to incorporate into the mould - because, there is an awful lot of detail on the torpedo bulges themselves - e.g are you going to incorporate the details into your mould - manhole covers, garbage chutes, & etc.

or...are you adding this sort of detail on to the finished hull?

Aye

Hi Bluebird,
When I started the hull I had every intention of moulding all the details that you mentioned.
Now that I am into the build I have came to the decision when building the hull to
reassess as I complete each stage.
At the moment I am filling and sanding the hull to the correct shape.
once this is done I will look to see if it is going to be easy to add and mould
the other items to the hull. 1 problem I may foresee is that the chutes are square
and may pose a problem in moulding
Another option I may consider is making a separate mould and add them latter to the hull.

Hope this helps,
Colin
