Title: Mayhem at Wicksteed 2007 - The Aftermath!
Post by: Martin (Admin) on October 30, 2006, 04:40:29 pm
Hi All,

We've read with great interest the posts on a get together for forum members and, as there seems to be a great deal of interest, we have decided to organise a 'Mayhemers' weekend.

After looking around for a fairly central location that is easy to get to with good facilities, we have approached the Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club asking if we can use their lake over a weekend in May, the response so far has been positive and we are looking to finalise a date shortly.- http://wpmbc.homestead.com/

We would like to make this an informal fun get together aimed at all the Mayhemers out there who would like to meet and have a good old chinwag off line and of course sail their boats with overnight camping encouraged for those who wish to stay late chewing the cud and sinking a beer or two.

As there are so many trade events during the year, we are not promoting this event has such. Traders will be more than welcome but purely in the capacity of having a relax and a sail, probably showing off a few existing or new models and maybe putting on an on water display (e.g formation destroyer or tug dancing !!! ). Static diplays etc are welcome, but no trade stands.

We are hoping that clubs may wish to bring along a tent and show there models and put on a few displays as well, but have not approached anyone yet.

What's will be on offer:
Free entry
Free Sailing
Free tea and coffee all day for Mahemers, kindly sponsored by (open to offers)
Reduced parking Rate ( with voucher - email me )
Free pint or two for any Mayhemers camping kindly sponsored by (open to offers)
Free, we supply he heat, you provide the meat BBQ
Free evening entertainment (well a film show)
Free Expert discussions and advise (Martins Jabber)
Free Shelter if it rains, sun shelter if it doesn't (well you never know)
Free to enter static display (well somewhere to keep your models when not sailing)
Free Mayhem fun awards, we'll think up some suitable reasons to give them out during the weekend
Free club display areas (if they want to)
Camping overnight £10.00
No moaning ....... because its Free

As this is informal we will be providing various awards, certificates, trophies etc for classes and winning models in categories that will become obvious to us during the weekend !?! e.g furthest traveled, best sinking, longest flight silliest idea etc... just general Mayhem stuff, and we will invent some organised more sane sailing events etc nearer the time....unless you have any better ideas..  :D

If there are any clubs that would like to put on a display, or any traders wishing to sponsor 'tea bags' for the weekend etc,  please drop us a line. martin@modelboatmayhem.co.uk

Hi all,
Really, really great to meet so many of you guys!
Loads seemed to be there, a great variety vessels and lots of smiling faces.....the free tea and coffee seemed to be a great hit.
We was VERY in the Mayhem 'ward room' / marquee so would you believe that at a normal show I would take 300 - 1000 photos per day... today I took about 20!?!?!? ( I asked fellow Mayhemers to take photos and post too. )

Here's a couple to start off with....

Hey all, if this is an ongoing thing, perhaps it could turn into the new big UK show?
 Thoughts to Martin.

It may be a good thing to have something totally new with no floaters messing things up if you know what I mean?

All for one and one for all and all that?

 Just wondering?

what a purfect day out, all boats survived the day, though taking Yamato out of car and laying her on the floor, caught mast on knee, PERTOING!!!! :( snapped one of the high antennae :(

what surprised me though was just how well some of the springers tried a new line in submergence and in the case of a certain red one  ::) taking half of the lake!

Excellent day out and I will be back! as for the springers, next is to try an M shape race :):)

What a superb day out that was guys, thanks VERY much for organising it. My wife was impressed too, she says it was the best days boating we've been on for a long time.

This pic says it all for me........

Mayhem indeed!  :D

My favourite boat of the day was the 'Hants and Dorset' ASR launch, really looked the part and even sounded right! I've sailed on a real one in my time from RAF Calshot and that brought back good memories.

Thanks again, roll on Mayhem08.....

Yes it was wet and windy.
But the company made up for the weather.
I managed to chat to most there (never a problem, shutting me up can be!!).
well worth the round trip.
Just wanted to say thanks to ALL who were there today, the Mayhemmers made the day.
We managed a few on the water in between chats.
Thanks to all the local lads who helped arrange the weekend.
And a BIG thanks to Martin, Bradders and their families for seeing it through to completion.
It was good to meet the PEOPLE behind the nicknames.
When is the next one Martin?

Well the rain didn't dampen anyone spirits today.... at the rain tried really hard !
We were soaked through within minutes of getting out the car but several dozen people turned up anyway... even all the way from the Wales &  Isle of White! Now that's true dedication. Even during the heaviest showers, there was always at least 6 boats on the water including 2 very water resistant Sea Wind yachts, the Springer tugs pushing everything around and even playing football!!. The weather was lifted with lots of roaring laughter and jeers that rang out across the lake.

I too second Bradders thoughts, what a wonderful bunch of people that turned up!
Bradders is holiday for a week now but we'll sit down when he gets back and spin a yarn or 10 together when get the photos sorted.

Highlights of the weekend for us, (in no particular order)  - turnout, smiling faces, support from the trade, the variety of vessels, wonderful atmosphere, Wicksteed Park management, Mrs Bradders & Mrs Mayhem (supplying constant the free tea and coffee the whole weekend), Hanna and her Dad, Phil Abbot of the Blackheath club, the Springer Tug display team, Colin Bishop, the 'Other' Brian, Martinno1fan, Ghost in the shell (who sailed all day, despite several lagers!) Wolf of Deans Marine (what a trooper), the Mini-Z boats, Wicksteed & Northampton clubs (what great hosts & in particular Martin who couldn't have been more helpful), the patients of everyone with the schedule (which was 'shot to hell' before we even got it going!) my son Kirk who put the whole Shane steering course out (but had no idea who, what, or why I was yelling at him but kept his temper anyway), the green trolley, the generosity of everyone that brought tea, coffee, cups etc, Guy Badley & family, Poll, Tugboat Kenny (and his amazing demonstration of sinking offshore support ship), the RNLI "display team", The Model Hovercraft Association, Richard (for lending us his PA), Ian (we all wish your Mrs well with your very imminent birth!) , Jackie, Laurie, Dave, Ron, John, Mark, Jag, Lucy & Paul…… and this is just the start of the list!!!

A SPECIAL BIG THANKS goes  Bradders, who I can honestly say, without his constant encouragement, cajoling, temper tantrums, barrage of insults, deep pockets, vision and organization skills – the event would not have happened.

THANKS EVERYONE, IT WAS BRILLIANT!

I think everything has been said by others - it was simply the most superb day ( I was only there on the Saturday)

In between sailing the Ketch, the Northsider and the airboat, I managed  to get some video shots of boats and people.

I wont be home until Tuesday but  "Model Mayhem The Video"  should be available on Wednesday.

Thanks for a wonderful day (and the gong that Bradders is seen giving to me in an earlier posting on this thread  :) )

I will put it on the server which holds my genealogical site and you will be able to access it from there  :)

I will have to do some drastic editing though to remove the parts which show long periods of the  ground - I left the camera switched on by mistake whilst I carried it around  ::)

Cant do that until I get home  from my daughters in London where I am until tomorrow.

Martin and Bradders,
What can I say, a great weekend, talking boats, running boats and meeting new friends. Highlights for me had to be the "Performing Springers" display team, and being one of those striaght running types I enjoyed making my springer go round in circles on purpose, and of course the sad demise of a certain oil rig support vessel (I still await my salvage fee)
Sunday may have been a little damp (I have just taken my waders off) and my gazebo sank into the mud (thanks for the photo Colin) it was still just as much fun. Many thanks to Mrs Bradders for all the tea.Same again next year ?? (with more of us stright running type maybe)

sorry I missed out on Sunday - but I really really enjoyed Saturdays meet.   I put a lot of faces to names and I hope, made a lot of good friends.

Well done Martin and Bradders  ;D  I promise I will bring the hobby launch next year.  I think I upset Martin by not bringing it along, but I was literally fighting for space in the car so roll on next meet in 2008.  ;D ;D

One face in particular was the new face of ACTion - by he looks nowt like I thought he would  ;D ;D 8)

Full set of photos will be sent to Martin for display on the Mayhem site. Some of the best ones are being included in my Model Boats report which I imagine will take a while to appear. Spent most of today fielding requests for specific shots! never got around to taking any pictures of my boats... :'(

I know its been said by others but I would like to add my thanks to Martin and Bradders for organising a genuinely pleasant day of sailing on Saturday.

It was great to be able to share the water with so many others -  without the petty "rules" so often associated with club events.

Everyone was friendly - and the little touches - welcome packs, free tea and barbecues were a breath of fresh air.

I know how much work goes in to organise an event like this - and I think you should be proud of what you achieved.

Lets hope this is going to be a regular event.

A thought for next time - how about a photo opportunity by having all the boats built to the same scale on the water at once?

Yet another big thank you to Martin, Bradders and of course their families for supporing them.

Saturday was superb, it was good to catch up with old and new faces.

What's a little rain on Sunday!

Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, now i have dried out!

Kind Regards

Bradders I will agree with that idea, and if Bigfella cannot arrange a good enough lake, I can as we have 6 within ten kilometres of town and free parking, free coffee and tea and even sunshine, and at least 25 to 30 degrees temperature, and all Mayhemmers would be made welcome and there would also be free accommodation for all who come....

Bradders,

We can supply the use of at least 6 lakes in a ten kilometre radius of town, with free tea and coffee, as well as sunshine, but the biggest drawcard would be free accommodation for all ho attended, with the warmest weather and SUNSHINE...................

THE VIDEO.

Video shots of the Saturday can be accessed at the link below.   If you want to view it more than once PLEASE download it to your computer and view it from there - Right click the link and then choose " save target as"  to a folder on your computer.  (I have hosted it on my genealogical site and bandwidth is fairly limited)

It is a 1.4Mb file and runs for 10mins 42 secs.  It would be longer but I could not sail all my boats AND video at the same time  :D

Hi Martin, ..... Thanks for all you and the gang did to make it such an enjoyable and interesting day. All your hard work was much appreciated and the friendly atmosphere relaxed me enough to sail the Waverider and the St Canute,  honest  I did but you had to be quick to see them in the morning when it was reasonably quiet. Hi Roger, Glad you enjoyed seeing another waverider. Mine is from about 1964 making it about 44 years old. But it took me a long time to build. I finished the build believe it or not in 1970. Well I did do other things in between. Tested it on the Gloucester canal without a radio and nearly lost it. Tested it in Birmingham with a radio and nearly lost it. So it survived the Mayhem well. It has a small elecric motor wich I am going to run off 12v now not six to get a bit more speed and get it to plane like they used to do when run with model plane engines. Chers Graham :)

Wow , what an impressive event. Your boat pond is outstanding too. I plan to introduce my model boat club, The St. Louis Admirals, to the fun of Springer tugs. Since we live along the mighty Mississippi River, there is a strong interest in push boats. Hopefully, the membership will see the need for such a boat. We have been looking for ways to attract new and younger members, perhaps Springer projects will help. I also plan to build a Springer of two with my class this next school year. Thanks for sharing the fun  Jolly Roger.
