In this picture of Smit Ierland there is a canister type thing on the wheelhouse roof, beige white and black stripes, what is it? Is it some kind of life raft canister?

And in this picture what are the short Grey coloured strips on the bottom of the hull? I have also seen them on kort nozzles?

Hi there. Sorry cant help you on the first one. But on the second question they are called anodes I think. They are lumps of metal that are sacrificial . As a ships hull has many diffrent types of metal electrolysis can happens due to the sea water and this can eat away at the hull. So they put these anodes at key places to act as sacrifice to save ware on the hull. This is what i was told so I am not 100% sure.

If you are talking of the grey parts on the bilge keels then they are anode's to stop corrosion.
the canister would be an antenna of some description

Thanks, but I am still puzzled. It use to carry to liferafts in canisters one either side. The holders sre still in place just above the life belt. So now where are the liferafts?

Check out the other photos, the canisters are still there except in the dry dock.

No cannisters in these photos? In fact no liferafts in any pictures of her taken from 2007 onwards?

the black white yellow canister is caled a towing sign.we use it here in holland on inland waters and harbours.
when the tug is conected one of the cewmembers have to lift it up. so the other ships can see that you are towing when disconect you have to take the sign douwn.
kind regards niels :-))

Interesting. Thanks for putting up the information. I'll have to add that to my Smit Nederland.
By chance, you wouldn't have any pilot house interior photos of this class of tugs would you?.
