Title: Mayhemmers- Would you like to see a member's gallery too...?

I would like to raise an issue for the moderators to peruse and for mayhemmers to poll-

DO YOU WANT TO SEE AN OFFICIAL MAYHEM FORUM MEMBERS GALLERY ON THE FORUM?

Say yes or no, followed by your reasons should you wish.

Perhaps we could hear from the moderators why there isn't one already?

Could one be added should significant numbers of members show they would like to see one too?

  What did you have in mind? A sort of head and shoulders shot to identify the guilty party(ies)?

i think that a members gallery would be a good idea, however maybe to display members models rather than members themselves, some may actually be harmful to the lens

Allowing members to post albums of their models will take up quite a bit of server capacity and that costs.

How do you propose it should be paid for?

One pic per member per day limit on pics no bigger than 800x600 wouldn't take up that much surely- no more than another board would?

well what about shoving the gallery on photo bucket, like the Post Image system.  that way martin don't pay for it

I'm not even sure what the issue is here.  Everyone is free to post whatever pictures they so wish and there is no limit to the numbers they can post apart from the size and 12 per post limit.  The Kirklees Hall of Fame is such a thread that contains a great number of model boats on the water for every one elses reference and interest which could just as easily be of members own boats.  Many members post pictures of thier models already and should anyone want to post any more they are free to do so.

I'm not sure what difference a gallery as such will make and the reason there isn't one is probably mainly due to the fact that no-one has suggested it or felt the need for it.  A poll seems unecessary and the tone seems to suggest that if there is enough demand then you have a right to one however as with all things related to this forum it all comes down to space and space, as has already been mentioned, costs money.

I think the best way forward, rather than a poll is to start a new thread asking for members to post pictures of thier boats and, if there is enough support for this, then perhaps that could be converted into a gallery in the future if it is seen as beneficial.

There is still the "Your Models" section on the main Mayhem site, which was, if memory serves, the original reason for Mayhem in the first place.

What about a 'show us your model' as a sticky at the start of each different ship section? That way people who what you look at pictures of tugs wont have to look through lots of pictures of warships of yachts etc? It could be a good reference section for people looking for particular types of models?

I was going to start a 'show us your corvette' thread in the warship section so I could see pictures of what other members had done for inspiration and ideas for my model.

also, if you want a show us your model thread, perhaps use img /img coding rather than post the same pic up here, that way the bandwidth is kept to a minimum as the pic os only actually hosted once, the img'd pic only links to it (i think)

My two cents would be host the images on photobucket and show one photo per model for the members.
So if you have 12 models you get 12 photos to show

Nice idea Bob.
But someone will still need to manage this, or we need to find a seemless way to do this.

Mayhem really does have limited resources. This site is not a commercial site, and cannot compete with some of the levels of service provided by bigger sites (sorry). There are a few sponsors who help with the running costs, as do donations by some of the membership, the remainming costs are down to Martin. The other resources, such as time, are given freely but are still limited (sadly).
