went to falmouth today watching sailing boats racing why do some of them have sloping bows and some have straight bows

Fashion, experimentation, effiency- short waterline length in light winds gives speed- long waterline when bending to the wind makes the hull more efficient, owners preference, designers preference- theres a few reasons to get on with.

And of course the class rules for each type of boat - a plumb bow will give greater waterline length within an overall length for the boat, but a spoon bow will give greater WL than the measured WL when heeled, and provide extra buoyancy for the press of a tall rig etc etc etc
